TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:8 The leaders and princes of Judah were the tribal chieftains of Israel (Num 1:4), court officials (1 Chr 22:17), district supervisors (1 Kgs 20:14-15), city officials (Judg 8:6), military leaders (1 Kgs 2:5; 2 Kgs 1:9-14; 25:23, 26), or even religious leaders (Ezra 8:24). Their influential role put them in a position of heightened responsibility before God (cp. Jas 3:1).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / litany

וְהָיָ֗ה בְּיוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה

and=it_was in/on=day sacrifice YHWH

As the General Notes to this chapter discuss, this phrase is the beginning of a litany. You may use that discussion to help you consider how to format the material in verses 8–9.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

בְּיוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה

in/on=day sacrifice YHWH

Yahweh is speaking about himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: “on the day of my sacrifice”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּיוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה

in/on=day sacrifice YHWH

As Zephaniah did in the previous verse, Yahweh is speaking as if he is literally going to offer a sacrifice. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “on the day when I punish you Judeans for your sins”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

בְּיוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה

in/on=day sacrifice YHWH

See how you translated the expression “the day of Yahweh” in the previous verse. Alternate translation: “at the time when I punish you Judeans for your sins”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּפָקַדְתִּ֥י עַל־הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְעַל־בְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְעַ֥ל כָּל־הַלֹּבְשִׁ֖ים מַלְבּ֥וּשׁ נָכְרִֽי

and,punish on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,officials and,to sons_of the=king and,to all/each/any/every the,dress_~_in clothing foreign

The expression visit upon means to punish. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “that I will punish the princes and the sons of the king and all the ones wearing foreign clothing”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הַשָּׂרִ֖ים

the,officials

In some languages the term princes describes male direct descendants of a monarch, but here it means court officials who may or may not have been members of the royal family. You could indicate that in your translation if it would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “the court officials”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

בְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

sons_of the=king

This could mean: (1) the actual members of the royal family. In that case, the word sons would have a generic sense, applying to both men and women, and it would mean not just the literal children of the present king but also the grandchildren and even later descendants of previous kings. Alternate translation: “the royal family” (2) the literal sons of the present king, Josiah, who would have been just boys at this time. The implication is that Yahweh is going to punish the Judeans so thoroughly that not even children will be spared. Alternate translation: “even the king’s young boys”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

כָּל־הַלֹּבְשִׁ֖ים מַלְבּ֥וּשׁ נָכְרִֽי

all/each/any/every the,dress_~_in clothing foreign

Yahweh is using one thing that the Judeans were doing to curry favor with foreign powers, wearing the same clothing that they did, to mean everything that they did to curry favor, especially including worshiping their gods. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “all those who have adopted foreign ways”
