TSNTyndale Study Notes:

29:13 These people used pious-sounding language in their prayers and talk (see Matt 15:8; Mark 7:6-7), but they did not truly honor God.
• In their hearts, they were not committed to the Lord at all.
• In their worship, they followed man-made rules and regulations rather than God’s word.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) This people comes close to me with their mouths and honors me with their lips

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said my=master because that/for/because/then/when draw_near the,people the=this in/on/at/with,mouth,their and,in/on/at/with,lips,their honor,me and,hearts,their far from,me and=it_became worship,their DOM=me commandment men taught )

The words “mouths” and “lips” represent what people say. Here it also represents saying something but not truly meaning it. Alternate translation: “The people of Jerusalem pretend to worship me and honor me with what they say”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) but their heart is far from me

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said my=master because that/for/because/then/when draw_near the,people the=this in/on/at/with,mouth,their and,in/on/at/with,lips,their honor,me and,hearts,their far from,me and=it_became worship,their DOM=me commandment men taught )

Here “heart” is a metonym that represents a person’s thoughts and emotions. The people not being truly devoted to Yahweh is spoken of as if their hearts were far away from him. Alternate translation: “but they do not honor me in their thoughts” or “but they are not truly devoted to me” (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) Their honor for me is only a commandment of men that has been taught

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “They honor me only because that is what people tell them to do”
