Section 5:1–13: Paul commanded the believers to punish the immoral church member

Someone had told Paul that one of the men in the church in Corinth had been having sexual relations with his father’s wife, that is, his step-mother. Paul wrote that the believers must punish this man by expelling him from the church. They should not allow this man to meet with them when they gathered to worship God together. Paul urged the Corinthians to keep away from people who called themselves believers but continually committed grave sins. The main point of this section is that the Corinthians were to judge and discipline the man within their fellowship who was sinning.

Paragraph 5:12–13

Paul concluded his discussion of the incestuous man by telling the believers that they must put him out of the church.

5:12a

What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church?

In Greek this verse begins with a connecting word often translated as “for” or “because” (see 5:12 in the RSV). Paul used it here to introduce the basis for his statements in 5:10 and 11. The GNT introduces this paragraph with the words:

After all (GNT)

What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church?: This is the first of two rhetorical questions. Paul used this rhetorical question to try to correct the thinking of the believers just as he did in 5:9 and 10. The expected or implied answer is “None at all.” Paul was really making a strong statement. He meant: “It is not my responsibility to judge wrongdoers who are not a part of our group.” There are two ways to translate this question here:

Use whichever form is more natural in your language for making a strong statement.

What business of mine is it: Paul used himself as an example of any Christian. He was not just speaking about himself personally. He meant that it is not our job as Christians to judge those who are not Christians. If translating this literally would imply that Paul was speaking only of himself and excluding other Christians, you may need to say:

What business of ours(incl) is it

those outside the church: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as those outside the church is literally those outside. The BSB has supplied the words the church to make the meaning clear. Paul was referring to those who were not part of the church, that is, those who did not believe in Jesus.

5:12b

Are you not to judge those inside?

Are you not to judge those inside?: This is a second rhetorical question. The implied answer to the question is: “Yes, it is our responsibility to judge the wrongdoers who are a part of the church.” Paul used this question to make a strong statement. He was emphasizing that the Corinthians were supposed to judge those within the church, that is, believers. There are two ways to translate this verse part:

Use whichever form is most natural in your language for emphasizing responsibility.
