OET (OET-RV)then you should hand this man over to Satan to punish his body, so that his spirit can be saved for when the master returns.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–13: Paul commanded the believers to punish the immoral church member

Someone had told Paul that one of the men in the church in Corinth had been having sexual relations with his father’s wife, that is, his step-mother. Paul wrote that the believers must punish this man by expelling him from the church. They should not allow this man to meet with them when they gathered to worship God together. Paul urged the Corinthians to keep away from people who called themselves believers but continually committed grave sins. The main point of this section is that the Corinthians were to judge and discipline the man within their fellowship who was sinning.

Paragraph 5:1–5

Paul introduced a new problem in the church at Corinth. One of the believers was behaving immorally. Paul urged the others to expel him from the church.

5:5a

hand this man over to Satan

hand this man over to Satan: This verse part indicates what Paul wanted the Corinthian believers to do. This was the judgment that he had already passed: the Corinthians were to hand the man over to Satan.

The phrase hand this man over to Satan apparently refers to expelling the man from the church. This would be like putting him back under Satan’s power. He would no longer be one of God’s people or part of the kingdom of God. Not only would this separate the man from the other believers, but it would also remove Christ’s protection over his life.

Refer to your translation of 1 Timothy 1:20, where the same phrase occurs.

Satan: Satan is another name for the devil. The name Satan means “enemy, opponent.” Satan is God’s enemy and the enemy of those who belong to God.

5:5b

for the destruction of the flesh,

for: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as for here introduces the purpose of the Corinthians in handing the man over to Satan. In some languages it may be natural to start a new sentence here and say something like:

Do this for…

the destruction: The Greek word that the BSB translates as destruction in this context refers to something being brought to an end or coming to ruin/disaster. There are several ways of translating the phrase “for the destruction”:

the flesh: The Greek word that the BSB translates as flesh is used in the NT with several meanings. There are two main ways to interpret it here:

  1. It refers to the man’s sinful nature, that part of his being that was corrupt or carnal. For example:

his sinful self (NCV) (NIV, NCV, GW, NLT)

  2. It refers to the man’s physical body. For example:

his body (CEV) (GNT, CEV, REB)

The NJB says “natural life.” The BSB, RSV, KJV, ESV, NET, and NASB say flesh, which can have either meaning (though the physical one is the more natural use of the word in English). It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is strongly supported by several major modern commentaries.

5:5c

so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.

so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as so that here introduces the main purpose of the action to expel the man. Paul was telling the Corinthian believers that their main purpose or goal in handing the wrongdoer over to Satan was to save the man’s spirit. Here is another way to translate this conjunction:

that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus (NKJV)

his spirit may be saved: A person’s spirit means the person himself. Paul was saying that the man would be saved or rescued by God from eternal death.

This is a passive clause. There are two ways to translate it:

on the Day of the Lord: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the Day of the Lord refers to the time when the Lord Jesus returns to judge people.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

παραδοῦναι τὸν τοιοῦτον

˓to˒_give_over (Some words not found in SR-GNT: παραδοῦναι τόν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός ἵνα τό πνεῦμα σωθῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου)

The phrase hand this man over identifies the punishment that goes with the verdict that Paul reached when he “judged” him ([5:3](../05/03.md)). If possible, express hand this man over as the result or the implication of Paul having “already judged” him. Alternate translation: [since I have declared this man guilty, hand him over]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

παραδοῦναι τὸν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ

˓to˒_give_over (Some words not found in SR-GNT: παραδοῦναι τόν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός ἵνα τό πνεῦμα σωθῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου)

The phrase hand someone over to someone else refers to transferring a person from one authority to another. Here, then, Paul wants the Corinthians to transfer this man from under the authority of the church to under the authority of Satan. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this figure of speech with a comparable idiom or plainly. Alternate translation: [turn this man over to Satan] or [put this man under Satan’s authority]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός

for ˓the˒_destruction ˱of˲_his flesh

Here, for introduces the result of “handing this man over to Satan.” If for would not indicate result in your language, use a word or phrase that does introduce a result. Alternate translation: [with the result that his flesh is destroyed]

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός

for ˓the˒_destruction ˱of˲_his flesh

This phrase could be a reference to the destruction of: (1) the parts of the man that are weak and sinful, which would indicate cleansing or sanctification. Alternate translation: [so that he will not continue to live sinfully] (2) the man’s physical body, which would mean either by physical suffering or death. Alternate translation: [so that he suffers in his body] or [for the death of his body]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός

for ˓the˒_destruction ˱of˲_his flesh

Here Paul uses the possessive form to clarify that destruction will happen to the flesh. If your language does not use this form to express that idea, you can translate destruction with a verb such as “destroy.” Alternate translation: [to destroy the flesh]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός

for ˓the˒_destruction ˱of˲_his flesh

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind destruction, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “destroy.” Alternate translation: [to destroy the flesh]

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

ἵνα

in_order_that

While for the destruction of the flesh is the result of the “handing over,” the words so that introduce the purpose of the “handing over.” Use a word or phrase in your language that introduces a purpose. Alternate translation: [in order that] or [with the goal that]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὸ πνεῦμα σωθῇ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παραδοῦναι τόν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός ἵνα τό πνεῦμα σωθῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are saved rather than focusing on the person doing the “saving.” If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that “God” does it. Alternate translation: [God may save his spirit]

Note 9 topic: translate-unknown

τὸ πνεῦμα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παραδοῦναι τόν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός ἵνα τό πνεῦμα σωθῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου)

Here, spirit refers to the parts of this man that are not flesh. Therefore, the spirit is not just the nonphysical part of the person but rather a reference to the whole person apart from his or her sins and weaknesses. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express that meaning of spirit with a word or phrase that refers to the salvation of the whole person. Alternate translation: [he] or [his soul]

Note 10 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου

in the day ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_Lord

Here Paul uses the words translated day of the Lord in the same way the Old Testament uses them: to refer to an event in which God saves his people and punishes his enemies. Paul specifically refers to the event in which Jesus returns to judge everyone. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate day of the Lord by including more words that clarify what Paul means by day. Alternate translation: [on the day when the Lord returns] or [when the Lord comes to judge everyone]

OET (OET-RV)then you should hand this man over to Satan to punish his body, so that his spirit can be saved for when the master returns.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
