OET (OET-LV) In the name of_the master of_us, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) having_been_gathered_together you_all and which of_mine in_spirit, with the power of_the master of_us Yaʸsous,
OET (OET-RV) When you assemble together in the name of our master Yeshua, my spirit is there along with the master Yeshua’s power,
Someone had told Paul that one of the men in the church in Corinth had been having sexual relations with his father’s wife, that is, his step-mother. Paul wrote that the believers must punish this man by expelling him from the church. They should not allow this man to meet with them when they gathered to worship God together. Paul urged the Corinthians to keep away from people who called themselves believers but continually committed grave sins. The main point of this section is that the Corinthians were to judge and discipline the man within their fellowship who was sinning.
Paul introduced a new problem in the church at Corinth. One of the believers was behaving immorally. Paul urged the others to expel him from the church.
Verse parts 4a, 4b, and 4c give three conditions that Paul said should be present when the sinful man is handed over to Satan.
The Corinthian Christians should be gathered together, 4a.
Paul should be present with them in spirit, 4b.
The power of the Lord Jesus should be present with the Corinthians, 4c.
When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus
When you are gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus
When you meet together to worship in the name of our Lord Jesus,
When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus: This phrase refers to a time when the Corinthian believers would meet together officially, as a church body, to worship the Lord Jesus.
our Lord Jesus: There is a textual problem here:
Some Greek texts say our Lord Jesus.
(BSB, NJB, NIV, NASB, REB, GW, CEV, NCV, NET)
Some Greek texts say the Lord Jesus
(NLT, RSV, ESV)
Some Greek texts say our Lord Jesus Christ.
(KJV)
It is recommended that you follow option (1). This is followed by the majority of English versions. The UBS Greek text omits the word “Christ” and encloses the word our in square brackets, indicating that it is doubtful.
and I am with you in spirit,
and I am with you in my spirit/heart/mind,
and I am with you spiritually,
I am with you in spirit: The phrase I am with you in spirit here, like the similar phrase in 5:3b, indicates that Paul would be spiritually present with the Corinthians.
along with the power of the Lord Jesus,
our Lord Jesus will give us power to do what he wants us to do.
then our Lord Jesus will cause to happen what you/we agree to do.
along with the power of the Lord Jesus: Here, the power of the Lord Jesus refers to the ability and authority that is given by the Lord Jesus. Jesus had given to Paul and the church the authority to represent him. Paul made the decision that they should expel the man who was acting immorally from their group. And Jesus had promised to do whatever a group of believers agreed on and decided to do. (See Matthew 18:20; John 14:14.)
There are several ways of understanding how this phrase connects to the rest of the sentence:
It is connected to the phrases “when you are assembled” and “I am with you in spirit.” For example:
When you are assembled, and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver… (RSV) (BSB, NIV, RSV, KJV)
It is connected only with the phrase “you are assembled.” For example:
So when you meet together and the power of the Lord is with you, I will be there too. (CEV) (CEV, NLT, NJB)
It is connected only with the phrase “I am with you.” For example:
When you meet together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I meet with you in spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus, then hand this man over to Satan. (NCV) (NCV, NRSV)
It is connected with the phrase “hand this man over to Satan.” For example:
through the power of the Lord Jesus you are to consign this man to Satan (REB) (REB, GW, GNT)
The NET, ESV, and NASB are all unclear or deliberately vague (as the NET footnote points out). If it is necessary for you to choose between these interpretations, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).In some languages there may not be much difference between interpretations 1 and 2, as illustrated by the NJB, where only the word “and” indicates the interpretation that is being followed:When you have gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, with the presence of my spirit, and in the power of our Lord Jesus, hand such a man over to Satan.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-simultaneous
συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος
˓having_been˒_gathered_together you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καί τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος σύν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ)
The phrase You and my spirit, having been assembled gives the time and situation in which the Corinthians should “hand this man over to Satan” ([5:5](../05/05.md)). If this phrase would not indicate timing or a situation in your language, you could use a word or phrase that does indicate time or situation. Alternate translation: [One of the times when you and my spirit have been assembled]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
συναχθέντων
˓having_been˒_gathered_together
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on the things that are assembled rather than what does the “assembling.” you can express the idea in active form by using a verb such as “gather together” or “meet.” Alternate translation: [meeting together]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καί τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος σύν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ)
Acting in the name of a person means representing that person. Representatives, those who do anything in the name of someone else, act with the authority of the people they represent. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express in the name of with a comparable idiom for representing someone or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [as representatives of our Lord Jesus Christ] or [as people who act for our Lord Jesus Christ]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure
ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος,
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καί τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος σύν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ)
The phrase in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ could modify: (1) how they have been assembled. Alternate translation: [You and my spirit, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ having been assembled] (2) how Paul has “passed judgment” in [5:3](../05/03.md). Alternate translation: [I passed this judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. You and my spirit, having been assembled,]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
καὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καί τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος σύν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ)
Just as in [5:3](../05/03.md), Paul speaks of his “spirit.” Just as there, Paul’s spirit being assembled with them is a figurative way to speak of how Paul thinks about and cares about them. Here, it has the additional implication that what they do when assembled carries Paul’s own authority. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind my spiritwith a comparable metaphor or plainly. Alternate translation: [and my thoughts] or [with my authority]
τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος
˱of˲_the ¬which ˱of˲_mine ˱in˲_spirit
Here, my spirit could refer to: (1) Paul’s spirit, which would be the part of him that connects with the Corinthians across a distance. Alternate translation: [my own spirit] (2) the Holy Spirit, which connects Paul with the Corinthians, even though they are not physically together. Alternate translation: [my share of God’s Spirit] or [I, by the power of God’s Spirit]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
σὺν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ συναχθέντων ὑμῶν καί τοῦ ἐμοῦ πνεύματος σύν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ)
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind power, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “empower” or “authorize.” Alternate translation: [as people who are empowered by our Lord Jesus] or [as people whom our Lord Jesus has empowered]
OET (OET-LV) In the name of_the master of_us, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) having_been_gathered_together you_all and which of_mine in_spirit, with the power of_the master of_us Yaʸsous,
OET (OET-RV) When you assemble together in the name of our master Yeshua, my spirit is there along with the master Yeshua’s power,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
