11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
This paragraph tells what will happen to those who resist the evil king of the North.
Some of the wise will fall,
Even some of those who are wise will suffer.
Some of those who have insight will be persecuted/killed.
Some of the wise will fall: The clause Some of the wise will fall here indicates that some of the faithful and wise Jewish teachers mentioned in 11:33a would suffer persecution. Avoid suggesting that Some of the wise will fall into sin. The following verse part shows that this is not the meaning in this context. Here are some other ways to translate this:
Some of the wise people will be defeated (GW)
Some of the discerning ones will fall victim to the persecutors
And some of the wise will fall victim to persecution (NLT)
Some of those who are wise will suffer (CEV)
so that they may be refined, purified, and made spotless until the time of the end: This is a purpose clause. It describes God’s purpose in allowing some of the wise to fall victim to persecution. God’s purpose is to make these people holy. Here are some other ways to translate this purpose clause:
in order to refine, purify and make them white until the end times (GW)
God will allow this to make them holy, pure, and without spot/blame until the end
so that they may be refined, purified, and made spotless
This will happen in order to refine, purify, and make God’s people clean.
The persecution/suffering will test and purify God’s people. It will help them to choose what is good and not sin.
they may be refined: The Hebrew verb phrase that the BSB translates as they may be refined is literally “to refine them.” This is a figure of speech that refers to the way metal is refined in order to test and purify it. There are several ways to translate this:
using a passive verb referring to either the refining of metal or the testing of a person. For example:
they may be tested (REB)
using an active verb. The implied subject may be God or the persecution itself. For example:
He wants to refine/test them
This persecution will refine/test them
using a noun. For example:
their refinement (NET)
their testing
purified: The word purified is here short for “so that they may be purified.” Again, this may be translated in several ways:
using a passive verb. For example:
made pure
using an active verb. For example:
to make them pure
using a noun. For example:
their…purification (NET)
made spotless: This is more literally “made white.” This is a passive verb and there are several ways to translate it:
using a passive verb. For example:
cleansed (NRSV)
using an active verb. For example:
made white (ESV)
using a noun. For example:
their…cleansing (NET)
Translate this series of three verbs in the way that is most natural in your language.
until the time of the end,
The persecution will continue until the end of this time,
This will continue until this time/age comes to an end.
until the time of the end: Here is another way to translate this verse part:
until the end comes (GNT)
for it will still come at the appointed time.
for the time that God has appointed/chosen/determined is still in the future.
God has decided when he will bring this time/age to an end.
for it will still come at the appointed time: This clause indicates that the end will come at the time God has appointed, but the end is not yet. It is still to come. Here are some other ways to translate this:
for there is still an interval until the time appointed (NRSV)
But the appointed time is still to come. (GW)
the appointed time: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as the appointed time refers to a fixed or set time for something to happen, such as a feast day. It is implied that God is the one who has appointed the time. In some languages it may be natural to make this explicit, as the GNT has done:
the time that God has set (GNT)
וּמִן־הַמַּשְׂכִּילִ֣ים יִכָּֽשְׁל֗וּ לִצְר֥וֹף בָּהֶ֛ם וּלְבָרֵ֥ר וְלַלְבֵּ֖ן עַד־עֵ֣ת קֵ֑ץ
and=from [those,who]_have_insight fall to,refine (is)_in=them and,to,purge_[them] and,to,purify_[them] until time_of extremity/end_of
This suffering will continue until the time when God has decided that it will end.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וּמִן־הַמַּשְׂכִּילִ֣ים יִכָּֽשְׁל֗וּ
and=from [those,who]_have_insight fall
Here stumble represents experiencing a disaster of one kind or another, including death itself.
Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
לִצְר֥וֹף
to,refine
Here in order to introduces the result that will happen. Alternate translation: “so that God can refine”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לִצְר֥וֹף
to,refine
To refine refers to the purifying of metal by melting it in a fire. When God makes his people more faithful to himself, this is spoken of as if they were metal that a worker was making more pure by putting it into fire.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וּלְבָרֵ֥ר
and,to,purge_[them]
To purify refers to making people, places, or objects suitable for God’s use by separating them from sin and other forms of evil. It speaks of evil as if it were physical dirtiness that could be removed by washing.
עֵ֣ת קֵ֑ץ
time_of extremity/end_of
Alternate translation: “the final days” or “the end of the world.” See how you translated this in [Daniel 8:17](../08/17.md).
ע֖וֹד לַמּוֹעֵֽד
again/more to,time
Here the appointed time implies that God has set the time. This can be put into active form. Alternate translation: “Yahweh has set the time in the future”
