Section 5:10–15: The LORD will cause all sorcery and idolatry in Israel to end

This section is another prophecy. In this prophecy, the LORD spoke directly to the people of Israel.This is the interpretation of a large majority of commentators. These include NICOT, A&F, NAC, UBS, EBC, CBC, WBC, ZIBBC, Waltke 2007 and others. Some commentators suggest that the referent here is not Israel but ungodly nations. For example, see Achtemeier. However the latter interpretation has little to support it and is not clearly followed in versions. In 5:10–11, he told them that he would take away the military equipment and other things that they relied on instead of him. In 5:12–14, he said that he would end all sorcery and idol worship in Israel in order to purify their worship of him. In 5:15, he told about his intention to punish other nations that did not obey him.UBS (page 222).

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

In these parallel lines, the LORD spoke about types of divination that the people relied on to gain control over nature or people.CBC (pages 331–332) and EBC (page 536). He will stop the people from relying on divination so that they will rely on him instead.

cut…from your hand: Here cut is part of a longer phrase “cut the sorceries from your hand.” The phrase from your hand is a common expression in the Old Testament. Often it has a figurative meaning of “from your use/power” or simply “from you.”Waltke 2007 (pages 323–324) suggests the expression means “from your power.” JFB (page 693) suggests that it means “which you now use.” Some commentators speculate that “from your hand” refers to occult objects held in the hand. However, there is no actual evidence to support this interpretation. A figurative meaning is probably intended here. Some versions translate the meaning of this expression directly. For example:

I will abolish the means of divination from your use (NAB)

Some versions leave the phrase from your hand implied. For example:

I will put an end to all witchcraft (NLT)

cut…have no: In this context, the phrases cut off and have no have a similar function. They are two ways to say that the LORD will stop the people from doing divination.

sorceries…fortune-tellers: In Hebrew, the word for sorceries refers to sorceries or magic arts.BDB #3785 (page 506) and NIDOTTE (Volume 2, page 735) . Some versions translate this word as “magic charms” or “sorcerers.” However, it is recommended that you translate this word as a general reference to sorcery.Other Hebrew words exist that mean sorcerer or charms. Here the generic word is used.

Yahweh is using cut off to mean “destroy” and sorceries from your hand to represent their power to practice witchcraft. If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I will destroy your power to practice sorcery]
