12:1-26 These lists of priests and Levites include a list of those who originally returned from exile with Zerubabbel (12:1-9), a chronological list of high priests (12:10-11), and the priests and Levites who served at the time of Joiakim, the high priest at the time of Nehemiah and Ezra (12:12-26).

the,Levites in/on/at/with,days_of ʼElyāshiyⱱ Yōyādāˊ/(Joiada) and,Johanan and,Jaddua recorded heads_of families
Here the book leaves out some of the words that a sentence would ordinarily need in order to be complete. The meaning seems to be, “During the times when Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua served as high priest, the Israelites kept records of which Levites were the clan leaders”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

in/on/at/with,days_of ʼElyāshiyⱱ Yōyādāˊ/(Joiada) and,Johanan and,Jaddua
The term days is used here to refer a particular period of time. Alternate translation: [the times when Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua served as high priest]
Note 3 topic: translate-names
אֶלְיָשִׁ֜יב יוֹיָדָ֤ע וְיוֹחָנָן֙ וְיַדּ֔וּעַ
ʼElyāshiyⱱ Yōyādāˊ/(Joiada) and,Johanan and,Jaddua
These are the names of four men.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
כְּתוּבִ֖ים
recorded
If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this with an active form, and you could say who did the action. Alternate translation: [the Israelites kept records]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
רָאשֵׁ֣י אָב֑וֹת
heads_of families
This seems to be an abbreviated way of saying “the heads of father’s houses.” The full expression “house of the father” or “father’s house” is used in [7:61](../07/61.md). See how you translated it there, and review the note there if that would be helpful. Alternate translation: [clan leaders]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
רָאשֵׁ֣י
heads_of
Head here is a figurative way of saying “leader.” Alternate translation: [leaders]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

and,the,priests on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in reign_of Dārəyāvesh the,Persian
Here again the book leaves out some of the words that a sentence would ordinarily need in order to be complete. The meaning seems to be, “The Israelites also made records during the reign of Darius III of which priests were the heads of their clans”
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ הַפָּֽרְסִֽי
Dārəyāvesh the,Persian
The Persian king named Darius who reigned at the time of Jaddua, the last high priest mentioned in this verse, was Darius III Codomannus. The implication is therefore that the phrase “Darius the Persian” refers to him. (Since he reigned about a hundred years after Nehemiah lived, it is probable that scribes added this information to the book later on to bring it up to date.) If it would be helpful to your readers, you could make this likely identification explicit. Alternate translation: [Darius III] or [Darius Codomannus] or [Darius III Codomannus]
