TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:1-26 These lists of priests and Levites include a list of those who originally returned from exile with Zerubabbel (12:1-9), a chronological list of high priests (12:10-11), and the priests and Levites who served at the time of Joiakim, the high priest at the time of Nehemiah and Ezra (12:12-26).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-names

וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֨ה וְעֻנִּ֧י

and,Bakbukiah (Some words not found in UHB: and,Bakbukiah and,Unni brothers,their at,opposite,them in,service )

These are the names of two men.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם

brothers,their

Brothers here means their fellow Levite leaders.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לְנֶגְדָּ֖ם לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת

at,opposite,them in,service

This phrase could mean one of two things. (1) It could mean that Mattaniah and his associates directed one choir, and Bakbukiah and Unni directed a second choir that stood opposite to this first one and sang responses to what it sang. (2) It could mean that Bakbukiah and Unni took turns with Mattaniah and his associates in assuming the responsibilities of directing a single Levite choir. Alternate translation: “led a second choir that sang responses” or “took turns with them directing the Levite choir”
