Luke 22:47–53

18:1 Yeshua is arrested

(Mat. 26:47-56, Mark 14:43-50, Luke 22:47-53)

18After he’d said all this, Yeshua and his followers went out of Yerushalem proper and over the Kidron stream towards a garden that he and his followers entered. 2And Yudas (the one who would hand him over) also knew the place because Yeshua and his followers often met there. 3Meanwhile Yudas had met with the soldiers and servants of the chief priests and the Pharisee party, and they all started coming into the garden with lanterns and flaming torches and weapons. 4Yeshua who already knew what was going to happen to him, came forward and asked them, “Who are you all looking for?

5And they answered, “Yeshua—the one from Nazareth.”

Yeshua responded, “I am the one.

Yudas, the one handing him over, was standing there among them. 6But when Yeshua had said that he is the one, they backed away and fell to the ground.[fn] 7So he asked them again, “Who are you all looking for?

And they answered, “Yeshua—the one from Nazareth.”

8Yeshua responded, “I already told you all that I am the one. So if it’s me that you’re looking for, let these others leave. 9(In this way, the statement was fulfilled that Yeshua had said previously: ‘I didn’t lose any of the ones that you gave me.’)[fn]

10Then Simon Peter drew the sword that he was carrying and swiped at the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11[ref]But Yeshua said to Peter, “Put your sword back in its sheath. I need to proceed with the plan that the father has prepared for me—I can’t just avoid the suffering.

18:6 TD: It’s not clear from the original if they fell over backwards, or if they stepped back and then fell forward (either voluntarily or involuntarily) onto their knees.

18:9 TD: It’s not certain from the original whether v9 was part of Mark’s commentary on the events or part of Yeshua’s response to the arresting party.

26:47 Yeshua is arrested

(Mark 14:43-50, Luke 22:47-53, Yhn 18:3-12)

47While he was still speaking, Yudas, one of the twelve, came and he was accompanied by a large crowd from the chief priests and local elders, and they were carrying swords and clubs. 48The one who was turning him in had prearranged a sign that he would kiss the one that they should arrest.

49He walked straight up to Yeshua and said, “Greetings, my honoured teacher,” and he kissed him.

50Friend,” Yeshua asked, “why have you come?

Then they came up to Yeshua, and grabbed and arrested him. 51But wow, one of Yeshua’s group put out a hand to stop them, then drew his sword and struck at the chief priest’s slave, cutting off his ear. 52Put your sword back in its sheath,Yeshua said, “because those who fight with the sword, die by the sword. 53Don’t you realise that I could just ask my father and he would place over a dozen divisions of heavenly soldiers here in front of me, 54however then the scriptures that tell what will happen wouldn’t get fulfilled.

55[ref]Then turning to the crowds, Yeshua said, “So you all came out with swords and clubs as if you were arresting a thief? 56I was sitting, teaching every day in the temple but you didn’t arrest me there.

26:55: Luk 19:47; 21:37.

14:43 Yeshua is arrested in the night

(Yhn 18:3-12, Mat. 26:47-56, Luke 22:47-53)

43Even while Yeshua was still speaking, Yudas reached him, followed by a crowd from the chief priests, and the religious teachers, and the elders—many armed with swords and clubs. 44Yudas had prearranged a signal with them that anyone who he greeted with a kiss, they should grab that person and lead him away under guard.

45So he walked right up to Yeshua and said, “My honoured teacher,” and greeted him with a kiss. 46Then the others with him grabbed Yeshua and secured him. 47But one of the ones with Yeshua that was beside him, drew his sword and struck a slave of the chief priest, cutting off the man’s ear. 48Yeshua spoke to the crowd, “Did you all bring swords and clubs to try to capture me like you’d chase down a thief? 49[ref]I was standing there teaching in the temple every day and you could have arrested me, but it’s happened this way to ensure that the what’s written in scriptures will be fulfilled.

50Meanwhile, the ones with Yeshua had taken off.

14:49: Luk 19:47; 21:37.

22:47 Yeshua is arrested at night

(Yhn 18:3-11, Mark 14:43-50, Mat. 26:47-56)

47While he was still speaking, wow, a crowd turned up with Yudas Iscariot in the front, and he went up to Yeshua to kiss him. 48But Yeshua asked him, “Yudas, are you turning in humanity’s child with a kiss?

49When the other apprentices around Yeshua saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Master, should we attack with our swords?” 50Then one of them slashed at the chief priest’s slave and sliced off his right ear.

51That’s gone far enough!” countered Yeshua, and touching the side of the man’s head, he healed him.

52Then Yeshua spoke to those who had come to capture him—the chief priests and temple officers and the local elders, “So you all came out here with swords and clubs as if I was a robber? 53[ref]I was there in the temple with you all everyday and yet you didn’t arrest me there. Yes, because this is your time: with the power of the darkness.

22:53: Luk 19:47; 21:37.
