OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

אַל־תְּשַׁקְּצוּ֙ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם

not defile DOM selves_of,you(pl)

Yahweh is using a future statement to give an instruction or command. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words using a command or instruction form. Alternate translation: [You must not make your lives detestable]

Note 2 topic: writing-poetry

בְּכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֑ץ

in=all the,creature the,swarms

This expression is an emphatic construction that uses a verb and its object that comes from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis. Alternate translation: [with anything at all that swarms all over]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וְלֹ֤א תִֽטַּמְּאוּ֙ בָּהֶ֔ם וְנִטְמֵתֶ֖ם בָּֽם׃

and=not make_~_unclean (is)_in=them and,made_unclean (Some words not found in UHB: not defile DOM selves_of,you(pl) in=all the,creature the,swarms and=not make_~_unclean (is)_in=them and,made_unclean in/on/at/with,them )

Yahweh repeats the same idea twice with different words in order to strengthen the command that the people of Israel are not to eat the meat of any unclean animal. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the clauses with a word that shows that the second clause is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: [And you should not make yourselves unclean with them. No, certainly, you should never be made unclean by them]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְנִטְמֵתֶ֖ם בָּֽם׃

and,made_unclean (Some words not found in UHB: not defile DOM selves_of,you(pl) in=all the,creature the,swarms and=not make_~_unclean (is)_in=them and,made_unclean in/on/at/with,them )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and do not let them make you unclean]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:1–15:33 These chapters detail the regulations pertaining to purity. The mixing of types of animals was forbidden (see Deut 22:9-11) because it represented a violation of the normal created order. “Abnormal” creatures—such as fish without fins and scales, carnivores, crawling insects, and animals without split hooves—cross boundaries between “normal” types and were unfit for food or offerings (see also Deut 14:1-21). The dietary laws were meant to distinguish Israel as a holy people from the surrounding nations (Lev 11:44-45).
