ULTforbidding to marry, to abstain from foods that God created for receiving with thanksgiving by the faithful and the ones knowing the truth.

BSB  § They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from certain foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

MSG(1-5)The Spirit makes it clear that as time goes on, some are going to give up on the faith and chase after demonic illusions put forth by professional liars. These liars have lied so well and for so long that they’ve lost their capacity for truth. They will tell you not to get married. They’ll tell you not to eat this or that food—perfectly good food God created to be eaten heartily and with thanksgiving by believers who know better! Everything God created is good, and to be received with thanks. Nothing is to be sneered at and thrown out. God’s Word and our prayers make every item in creation holy.

NETThey will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

LSVforbidding to marry—to abstain from meats that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those believing and acknowledging the truth,

FBVtell people to not marry and not to eat certain foods made by God that should be accepted with thanks by those who trust and know the truth.

TCNTThey forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

T4TFor example, they forbid believers to marry because they say that it makes us unacceptable to God. They also command that people abstain from eating certain foods. But God created such foods in order that we can eat them! We who believe in Christ know the true teaching, and we thank God for the food that he gives us. That is why we can eat it.

LEBwho forbid marrying and insist on abstaining from foods that God created for sharing in with thankfulness by those who believe and who know the truth,

BBEWho keep men from being married and from taking food which God made to be taken with praise by those who have faith and true knowledge.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-5 Paul’s sound teaching (3:16) contrasts with the false teachings that he denounces.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἀπέχεσθαι

/to_be/_keeping_away

Here Paul leaves out some of the words that a sentence would ordinarily need in order to be complete. He does not mean that these false teachers will forbid believers to abstain from certain foods, but that the false teachers will require them to abstain from certain foods. You could supply these words if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [requiring to abstain]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων

/to_be/_keeping_away ˱from˲_foods

Here Paul implies that the false teachers were telling people to abstain from certain kinds of foods. They were not telling people to abstain from eating in general. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [to abstain from specific foods] or [to abstain from certain types of food]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

βρωμάτων ἃ ὁ Θεὸς ἔκτισεν

˱from˲_foods that ¬the God created

Here Paul is further describing the foods from which the false teachers required people to abstain. He is not distinguishing between some foods that God created and other foods that God did not create. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different form that describes something rather than distinguishes between things. Alternate translation: [from foods, those which God created] or [from foods. God created these foods]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ εὐχαριστίας

with thanksgiving

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of thanksgiving, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [thankfully]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὴν ἀλήθειαν

the truth

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of truth, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the true teaching]
