Section 1:10–2:16: Believers should not divide up into competing factions. They should be united by true wisdom, the message of the cross.

In this section Paul wrote about a serious problem in the Corinthian church. The Corinthian believers were dividing up into competing groups. They were following whichever human leader they admired the most. Paul tried to solve this problem by reminding the Corinthians of the message of the cross. He wanted them to stop following human wisdom and to follow God’s wisdom.

Paragraph 2:1–5

In this paragraph Paul used himself as an example of someone who did not depend on false, human wisdom. When he preached to the Corinthians, he talked only about what the Lord Jesus Christ did to save them. He trusted in God’s power to enable them to believe. He did not try to persuade them with clever speech.

2:2a

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For here introduces the reason why Paul did not use eloquence and wisdom. He had decided to concentrate upon preaching about Jesus’ death on the cross.

I resolved to know nothing…except: The clause I resolved to know nothing means “I decided not to know anything.” This is a figure of speech called a hyperbole, that is, an exaggeration. Paul actually knew a lot about a lot of things. However, he decided to not tell about them except for one important thing. He decided he would only talk/preach about Christ’s death. Other ways to translate I resolved to know nothing…except are:

I decided to concentrate only on… (NLT96)

I made up my mind to speak only about… (CEV)

I decided to be concerned about nothing…except (NET)

I decided…I would forget everything except… (NLT04)

while I was with you: The phrase while I was with you refers to an earlier time when Paul was in Corinth preaching to the Corinthians.

2:2b

Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Jesus Christ and Him crucified: This phrase tells the topic that Paul decided to talk about to the Corinthians. That topic was Jesus Christ. He especially wanted to talk about his crucifixion and its meaning. Other ways to translate this are:

Jesus Christ, who was crucified (GW)

except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross (GNT)

General Comment on 2:2a-b

In some languages it may be more natural to use a direct quote when talking about deciding something. For example:

2aWhile I was there with you, I said to myself: “For the whole time I am here, I will only talk 2babout Jesus Christ and how he died on the cross.”

Here Paul speaks as if he decides to forget all his knowledge and become ignorant of everything except Jesus Christ. This is an exaggeration that the Corinthians would have understood as emphasis on Paul’s sharp focus on Jesus Christ as the one thing he wished to tell the Corinthians about. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this exaggeration with a phrase that indicates that it is an exaggeration or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [I decided to speak among you only about Jesus Christ]

If it would appear in your language that Paul makes a strong statement about knowing nothing and then contradicts it, you could reword this sentence so that there is no except. Alternate translation: [I decided that among you I would only know Jesus Christ and him crucified]

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on Jesus Christ who was crucified rather than the person doing the “crucifying.” If you must state who does the action, you can express the idea with: (1) Christ as the subject. Alternate translation: [how he laid down his life on the cross] (2) an indefinite or vague subject. Alternate translation: [how they crucified him]

2:1-5 God’s sovereign work made Paul’s preaching effective. In his evangelism, Paul did not rely on the persuasive power of his intellect or his dynamic personality, but on the power of the Holy Spirit (see also study note on 1:18-31).
