OET (OET-LV)which no_one of_the rulers of_ the _age this has_known, because/for if they_knew, not would the master of_ the _glory they_executed_on_a_stake,

OET (OET-RV)None of the rulers of this present age understood it, because if they had, they wouldn’t have crucified the master of that kingdom,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:10–2:16: Believers should not divide up into competing factions. They should be united by true wisdom, the message of the cross.

In this section Paul wrote about a serious problem in the Corinthian church. The Corinthian believers were dividing up into competing groups. They were following whichever human leader they admired the most. Paul tried to solve this problem by reminding the Corinthians of the message of the cross. He wanted them to stop following human wisdom and to follow God’s wisdom.

Paragraph 2:6–13

In this paragraph Paul wrote about God’s wisdom, that is, his wise plan to send Christ to save people. Those who follow or depend on human thinking/wisdom do not want to hear or accept God’s message. It is only God’s Spirit who can cause people to know and accept God’s thoughts/plans as wise. The Spirit makes God’s thoughts known only to people/believers who are under the Spirit’s control. These believers try to obey the Spirit in following God’s ways.

2:8a

None of the rulers of this age understood it.

None of the rulers of this age understood it: The phrase None of the rulers of this age understood it indicates that the human spiritual/religious leaders did not understand God’s wisdom, that is, God’s wise plan. Another way to translate this is:

None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. (GNT)

the rulers of this age: The phrase the rulers of this age refers to the same rulers as in 2:6c. They are human authority figures, leaders, and powerful people.

2:8b-c

if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory: Paul here was talking about something that did not happen. Jesus was crucified since they did not understand God’s plan. In some languages it may be necessary to be more explicit. For example:

if those rulers had understood God’s plan, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But they did not understand it, and so they did crucify him.

2:8b

For if they had,

For: This Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For here introduces Paul’s explanation of how we know that the rulers of this world did not understand God’s plan.

2:8c

they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

the Lord of glory: The phrase the Lord of glory refers to the Lord Jesus Christ. The word glory here refers to Christ’s greatness and power, his majestic radiance. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

the glorious/great/majestic Lord

our Lord who is so glorious/powerful

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἣν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἥν οὐδείς τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἔγνωκεν εἰ γάρ ἔγνωσαν οὐκ ἄν τόν Κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν)

Just as in [2:7](../02/07.md), which refers to “the wisdom,” not to “a mystery.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could repeat “wisdom” here. Alternate translation: [the wisdom that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου

˱of˲_the rulers ¬the ˱of˲_age this

Just as in [2:6](../02/06.md), Paul uses the possessive form to describe rulers who are in power during this age. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form by using language about the time in which the rulers have power or the place in which they have power. Alternate translation: [of the rulers who have power now] or [of the rulers who control this world]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἥν οὐδείς τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἔγνωκεν εἰ γάρ ἔγνωσαν οὐκ ἄν τόν Κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν)

Here, for introduces Paul’s proof that the rulers did not understand. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the meaning of this word using a word that customarily introduces proof or evidence. Alternate translation: [which is true because]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-condition-contrary

εἰ & ἔγνωσαν, οὐκ ἂν τὸν Κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν;

if & ˱they˲_knew not (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἥν οὐδείς τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἔγνωκεν εἰ γάρ ἔγνωσαν οὐκ ἄν τόν Κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν)

Here Paul uses if to introduce a scenario that he knows is not true. He wants to point out that the rulers were the ones who crucified Jesus, and this proves that they did not understand God’s wisdom. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form by reversing the two clauses and making they understood it negative and they would not have crucified the Lord of glory positive. Alternate translation: [they crucified the Lord of glory, which means that they did not understand it]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὸν Κύριον τῆς δόξης

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἥν οὐδείς τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἔγνωκεν εἰ γάρ ἔγνωσαν οὐκ ἄν τόν Κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe the Lord who has glory. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form by translating glory with an adjective or a relative clause. Alternate translation: [the Lord, who has glory]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:8 The rulers of this world are probably political rulers rather than spiritual authorities (see also 15:24; cp. Acts 3:14-15; 4:10; 5:29-32).
