SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:10–2:16: Believers should not divide up into competing factions. They should be united by true wisdom, the message of the cross.

In this section Paul wrote about a serious problem in the Corinthian church. The Corinthian believers were dividing up into competing groups. They were following whichever human leader they admired the most. Paul tried to solve this problem by reminding the Corinthians of the message of the cross. He wanted them to stop following human wisdom and to follow God’s wisdom.

Paragraph 2:6–13

In this paragraph Paul wrote about God’s wisdom, that is, his wise plan to send Christ to save people. Those who follow or depend on human thinking/wisdom do not want to hear or accept God’s message. It is only God’s Spirit who can cause people to know and accept God’s thoughts/plans as wise. The Spirit makes God’s thoughts known only to people/believers who are under the Spirit’s control. These believers try to obey the Spirit in following God’s ways.

2:10a

But God has revealed it to us

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But here introduces a contrast. The contrast is between what unbelievers are not able to understand and what God revealed to believers through his Spirit. God had allowed believers to know what he has prepared for those who love him. In some languages it may not be natural to have a conjunction here as well as in 2:9a. It may be more natural to leave it untranslated here. For example:

God has revealed those things to us by his Spirit. (GW)

God has revealed it to us: The BSB has used the pronoun it to refer to “God’s secret wisdom” as in 2:7. It also refers to the things that “God has prepared for those that love him” in 2:9.

us: The Greek pronoun that the BSB translates as us here refers to Paul and the other apostles, and also to all believers. God had revealed the gospel to Paul and the apostles first, but then they shared this gospel with the Corinthians. Through the Holy Spirit they had all come to know the good things that God was preparing for them. You may need to choose between an inclusive and an exclusive pronoun us here. It is recommended that you use an inclusive pronoun.

2:10b

by the Spirit.

the Spirit: The word Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit. Some other ways to translate this are:

God’s Spirit

the Holy Spirit

2:10c

The Spirit searches all things,

In the Greek text, 2:10c begins with a conjunction. It introduces Paul’s basis for saying that God’s Spirit was the one who had revealed God’s hidden wisdom. The BSB and some other English versions do not translate this conjunction.

Here is a way to translate this conjunction:

For (NET, NLT)

You should introduce this part of the verse in a way that is natural in your language.

The Spirit searches all things: In 2:10a-b, Paul said that God revealed his wise plan through the Holy Spirit. Here in 2:10c-11, Paul explained how the Spirit knows God’s plan and reveals it.

searches: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as searches is figurative. It means that he knows all about everything. He is aware of everything. It does not mean that the Spirit goes around looking for information. He is not “searching” as if there were things he was trying to find out. For example:

For nothing is hidden from the Spirit. (JBP)

2:10d

even the deep things of God.

even the deep things of God: The phrase deep things of God refers to the hardest things there are to know about God. It includes everything about God’s nature, actions and thoughts. The Holy Spirit knows all about “the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God” mentioned in (2:7a). He also knows all about “what God has prepared for those who love him” mentioned in (2:9c). Here is another way to translate this:

even the depths of God’s own nature (REB)

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἡμῖν γάρ ἀπεκάλυψεν ὁ Θεός διά τοῦ Πνεύματος τό γάρ Πνεῦμα παντᾶ ἐραυνᾷ καί τά βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Here, For introduces an explanation of the last line of the quote from [2:9](../02/09.md): “these things God has prepared for those who love him.” Paul wants to explain that these are the things that God has revealed to those who believe. If it would be helpful in your language, you could leave For untranslated or use a word or phrase that introduces an explanation. Alternate translation: [In fact,]

(Occurrence 2) γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἡμῖν γάρ ἀπεκάλυψεν ὁ Θεός διά τοῦ Πνεύματος τό γάρ Πνεῦμα παντᾶ ἐραυνᾷ καί τά βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Here, For introduces an explanation for why God’s revelation is made to us through the Spirit. It is because the Spirit searches everything and knows everything that is revealed. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this connection with a comparable word or phrase that introduces this kind of explanation. Alternate translation: [He works through the Spirit because]

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

ἐραυνᾷ

˓is˒_searching

Here, searches refers to how someone can explore or seek to know about something else. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express searches with another word for “exploring” or “knowing.” Alternate translation: [comprehends] or [knows about]

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

τὰ βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἡμῖν γάρ ἀπεκάλυψεν ὁ Θεός διά τοῦ Πνεύματος τό γάρ Πνεῦμα παντᾶ ἐραυνᾷ καί τά βάθη τοῦ Θεοῦ)

The phrase deep things of God refers to things about God that are hard to understand or things about God that no one can fully comprehend. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this form with a comparable expression or state the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [secrets about God] or [things about God that no one knows]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:6-16 Paul emphasizes God’s wisdom in contrast to the world’s wisdom. Real wisdom is not mere human wisdom but the wisdom of the Spirit, expressed in the so-called “foolishness” of the Good News (see 1:20-25).
