OET (OET-LV)And_overthrow [the]_throne of_kingdoms and_destroy the_strength of_the_kingdoms the_nations and_overthrow chariotry and_riders_their and_fall horses and_riders_their each in/on/at/with_sword his/its_woman.

OET (OET-RV)I’ll overthrow the thrones of kingdoms, and destroy the strength of the nations. I’ll overthrow chariots and riders—horses and their riders will fall and related tribes will kill each other.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

כִּסֵּ֣א מַמְלָכ֔וֹת

thrones kingdoms

Yahweh is not referring to a specific throne. He means the thrones of all of the kingdoms in the world. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using a plural form. Alternate translation: “the thrones of kingdoms”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

כִּסֵּ֣א מַמְלָכ֔וֹת

thrones kingdoms

Yahweh is referring to the ruling authority of kingdoms by association with the royal throne on which the rulers of those kingdoms sit. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the ruling authority of kingdoms”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

וְהָפַכְתִּ֤י מֶרְכָּבָה֙ וְרֹ֣כְבֶ֔יהָ וְיָרְד֤וּ סוּסִים֙ וְרֹ֣כְבֵיהֶ֔ם

and,overthrow chariots and,riders,their and,fall horses and,riders,their

Yahweh is using two components of an army, its chariot teams (the chariots and their riders) and its cavalry troops (the horses and their riders), to mean the entire army. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “I will destroy the entire armies of the kingdoms that oppose you”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מֶרְכָּבָה֙ וְרֹ֣כְבֶ֔יהָ

chariots and,riders,their

Yahweh is not referring to a specific chariot and rider. He means all of the chariots and riders in the armies of the kingdoms opposed to the Judeans. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using a plural form. Alternate translation: “the chariots and their riders”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְיָרְד֤וּ

and,fall

Here the word fall means “die” by association with the way someone who dies will fall to the ground. Be sure that it is clear in your translation that these horses and riders will not fall down accidentally. Alternate translation: “and … will die”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אִ֖ישׁ בְּחֶ֥רֶב אָחִֽיו

(a)_man in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman

See how you translated the similar use of the phrase “a man” in 1:9. Alternate translation: “each one of them by the sword of his brother”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

אִ֖ישׁ בְּחֶ֥רֶב אָחִֽיו

(a)_man in/on/at/with,sword his/its=woman

Here, the sword represents a violent death. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “each one when his brother kills him”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אָחִֽיו

his/its=woman

Yahweh is speaking of a fellow soldier as if he were literally the brother of another soldier whom he killed. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “his fellow solider”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:22 I will overturn their chariots and riders: The prophet’s language would remind Israel of their deliverance from the Egyptian army (see Exod 15:1-21). The ambiguity of the threat of God’s judgment makes it unclear whether Haggai is referring to events in the distant future or to something more immediate involving the Persian Empire (e.g., the Greek-Persian wars during the reigns of Darius I and Xerxes or the later Peloponnesian War).
