OET (OET-LV)Great it_will_be the_splendor the_house the_this the_latter more_than the_former he_says YHWH of_hosts and_in/on/at/with_place the_this I_will_give peace the_utterance of_YHWH of_hosts.

OET (OET-RV)I declare that this temple will be greater in the future than it was in the past, and also that I will give peace and prosperity to this place.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

big/great will_belong glory the,house the=this the,latter from/more_than the,former he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels and,in/on/at/with,place the=this give peace declares YHWH armies/angels

If you have decided to translate this oracle so that it does not contain quotations within a quotation, you can translate the second-level quotations in this verse as indirect quotations. Alternate translation: “I, Yahweh of Armies, say that the latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, and I, Yahweh of Armies, declare that in this place I will give peace”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

גָּד֣וֹל יִֽהְיֶ֡ה כְּבוֹד֩ הַבַּ֨יִת הַזֶּ֤ה הָאַֽחֲרוֹן֙ מִן־הָ֣רִאשׁ֔וֹן

big/great will_belong glory the,house the=this the,latter from/more_than the,former

Yahweh is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “The latter glory of this temple will be greater than the former glory of this temple” or “The latter glory of this temple will be greater than its former glory”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

גָּד֣וֹל יִֽהְיֶ֡ה כְּבוֹד֩ הַבַּ֨יִת הַזֶּ֤ה הָאַֽחֲרוֹן֙ מִן־הָ֣רִאשׁ֔וֹן

big/great will_belong glory the,house the=this the,latter from/more_than the,former

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of glory, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “This temple will become more glorious now than it was before”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הַבַּ֨יִת

the,house

Here, as in many other instances throughout the book, Yahweh is speaking of his temple as if it were a house in which he lived. If you decided to translate the word house as “temple,” look back over your translation to make sure that you have done this consistently. Alternate translation: “temple”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּבַמָּק֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן שָׁל֔וֹם

and,in/on/at/with,place the=this give peace

By this place, Yahweh most likely means Judea and especially Jerusalem. The enemies of the Judeans destroyed the previous temple, but Yahweh is promising here that he will now cause the nations to be at peace with them so that enemy armies do not destroy the rebuilt temple. You could indicate that in your translation if it would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “and here in Jerusalem I will give peace” or “and I will not allow your enemies to come here to Jerusalem and destroy this temple again”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:9 future glory: Haggai might have in mind the Messiah’s coming to his Temple (see Mal 3:1). Jesus was presented in the Lord’s Temple as an infant (Luke 2:22), and he taught there as an adult (Luke 19:45-47). Jesus, the human Word of God, is greater than the Temple (Matt 12:6; see John 2:13-22). Although it was recognized by only a few, Jesus’ presence in the Temple far outshone the glory in the Tabernacle at the time of Moses and in Solomon’s Temple (cp. Luke 2:29-32).
• in this place I will bring peace: The priestly benediction (Num 6:24-26) was pronounced as part of the Temple liturgy. In the last days, God would make a covenant of peace with Israel (Ezek 34:25; 37:26). The good result of rebuilding the Temple was a guarantee on that future peace.
