OET (OET-LV)Every scripture is god-breathed and beneficial for teaching, because/for rebuke, because/for correction, because/for discipline which in righteousness,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πᾶσα Γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος

every Scripture_‹is› God-breathed and beneficial

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “God has breathed out all Scripture, and it is profitable”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πᾶσα Γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ

every Scripture_‹is› God-breathed and

Here Paul speaks as if God had breathed all Scripture. He means that God is the one who spoke or gave Scripture through his Spirit. In other words, All Scripture has its origin in God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in simile form or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “All Scripture comes from God, as if he had breathed it out, and it” or “All Scripture is produced by God and” or “All Scripture originates in God and”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πᾶσα Γραφὴ

every Scripture_‹is›

Here the phrase translated as All Scripture refers to what we call the Old Testament. Paul could be referring to: (1) the entirety of Scripture. Alternate translation: “The whole of Scripture” (2) each of the individual scriptures. Alternate translation: “Every scripture”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὠφέλιμος

beneficial

Here Paul could be implying that Scripture is profitable: (1) for someone to use in the following ways. Alternate translation: “is profitable for people to use for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2) as it functions in the following ways for those who read or hear it. Alternate translation: “is profitable for our teaching, for our reproof, for our correction, for our training in righteousness”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πρὸς διδασκαλίαν, πρὸς ἐλεγμόν, πρὸς ἐπανόρθωσιν, πρὸς παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ

for teaching for rebuke for correction for discipline ¬which in righteousness

If your language does not use abstract nouns for some or all of the ideas in this list, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: “for instructing, for reproving, for correcting, for training to be righteous”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:16 The fact that Scripture is inspired by God (literally God-breathed, breathed out by God’s own speech; see also Heb 4:12-13; 2 Pet 1:20-21) does not negate the active involvement of the human authors. But it does affirm that God is fully responsible for his word. Scripture is true, reliable, authoritative, permanent, and powerful because it comes from God himself. Its message is coherent, and it is consistent in its testimony about Jesus Christ (see Luke 24:25-27, 44; John 5:39-40; Acts 3:24; 1 Cor 15:3-4). Thus it has the power to bring salvation and elicit faith. It must not be abused, as the false teachers had been doing (2 Tim 4:2-4; 1 Tim 1:4-7; cp. 2 Pet 3:16), but must be taught properly (2 Tim 2:2, 15).
• As a consequence of inspiration, all Scripture is useful. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament are together our guide and teacher in life.
