OET (OET-LV)YHWH hosts he_will_defend (on)_them and_they_will_eat and_they_will_subdue stones_of a_sling and_they_will_drink they_will_be_in_an_uproar like wine and_they_will_be_full like_bowl like_the_corners the_altar.

OET (OET-RV)Army commander Yahweh will defend them,
⇔ and they will devour them and deflect the stones from the slings.
⇔ Then they’ll drink and shout like men drunk on wine,
⇔ and they’ll be filled with wine like bowls,
⇔ drenched like the corners of the altar.

uW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) they will devour them

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

Alternate translation: “the people of Judah will devour their enemies”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) will devour

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

To completely defeat enemies is spoken of as devouring them as a wild animal eats its prey. Alternate translation: “will completely defeat”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) defeat the stones of the slings

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

Slings to throw stones were a common weapon in the days of Zechariah. Here the “stones of the slings” represent the soldiers who were using them to attack Israel. Alternate translation: “defeat the enemies who attack them with slings and stones”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) Then they will drink and shout like men drunk on wine

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

The people of Judah will shout and celebrate their victory over their enemies as if they were noisy drunks. Alternate translation: “Then they will shout and celebrate their victory as loudly as if they were drunk”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) they will be filled with wine like bowls

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

This probably refers to the bowls that the priests used to carry animal’s blood to the altar. Alternate translation: “they will be as full of wine as the basins with which priests carry blood to the altar”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) like the corners of the altar

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH armies/messengers defend (on),them and,they_will_eat and,they_will_subdue stones_of sling and,they_will_drink roar like wine and,they_will_be_full like,bowl like_[the],corners altar )

Altars had projecting corners that were drenched in animal blood. Alternate translation: “they will be drenched as the corners of the altar are covered in blood”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:15 In ancient battles, great stones (literally sling-stones) were hurled at defenders on city walls and catapulted onto the inhabitants inside. The Maccabees’ triumph over the Hellenistic Seleucids in the 100s BC might have partially fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy of Israel’s defeat of the Greeks (see 1 Maccabees 3:16-24; 4:6-16; 7:40-50).
• They will be filled with blood . . . drenched with blood: When the Lord unleashes his armies against the Greeks, the amount of bloodshed will be vast.
• like a bowl: Ceremonial sprinkling bowls filled with animal blood were used in the rituals of sacrifice. This image almost suggests that the vanquishing of the Lord’s enemies is in some sense an offering to him (see Exod 24:6; Lev 1:5; 16:18).
