TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:2 has sworn this by his holiness: Holiness speaks of God as existing outside of and independent of creation; his nature is wholly other than what he has created. The oath is similar to 6:8; 8:7.
• hooks: The Assyrians were known for their inhumane treatment of war captives (see 2 Chr 33:11; cp. 2 Kgs 19:28). A stela (stone pillar with an inscription) discovered in northern Syria shows the Assyrian king Esarhaddon holding cords that pass through the lips of two war captives. A recent scholar has suggested that hooks referred to the rings inserted into the noses of cattle to manage them.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness

(Some words not found in UHB: sworn my=master GOD in/on/at/with,holiness,his that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! days coming upon,you_all and,take_~_away DOM,you_all in/on/at/with,hooks and,last,you_all in/on/at/with,hooks fish )

This means that Yahweh promised that he would do something, and he assured people that he would do what he promised because he is holy.

(Occurrence 0) the days will come on you

(Some words not found in UHB: sworn my=master GOD in/on/at/with,holiness,his that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! days coming upon,you_all and,take_~_away DOM,you_all in/on/at/with,hooks and,last,you_all in/on/at/with,hooks fish )

The word “you” refers to the wealthy women of Israel who lived in Samaria, but also includes men.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the days will come on you when they will take you away with hooks

A time in the future when bad things will happen to the people is spoken of as if those days will attack the people. The word “they” refers to their enemies. Alternate translation: “There will be a time when your enemies will take you away with hooks”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) they will take you away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks

These two phrases mean basically the same thing and emphasize that the enemy will capture the people like people catch fish. Alternate translation: “they will capture you as people capture animals, and they take you away”
