This page contains selected passages from the Open English Translation with the passage from the OET Readers’ Version on the left, and the OET Literal Version on the right. Minimal commentary is included (only some headings)—our aim is simply to conveniently list the passages in one place so that our readers can make up their own minds about what the writer of the passage was intending to communicate.
1:1 Maria’s visit to Elizabeth
39 Several days later, Maria determined that she’d go to the town in the hills of Yudea 40 where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth, 41 and as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting, her baby in her womb kicked, and she was filled with the holy spirit 42 and she called out loudly, “Out of all women, you have been blessed and the baby in your womb has been blessed. 43 How could this happen to me—that the mother of my master would come and visit me! 44 You see, as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb kicked with excitement, 45 and the woman who believed that everything the master told her will happen, she will be blessed.”
1:46 Maria’s song of praise
47 and my spirit is so happy about God, my saviour,
48 [ref]because he noticed his humble servant girl.
Look now, all the future generations will consider that I was blessed
49 because the powerful one treated me incredibly,
50 He shows his mercy to multiple generations;
to those who honour him.
he scatters those who are proud in their hearts.
52 [ref]He knocks kings off their thrones,
and praises those who’re humble.
53 Those who’re hungry, he fills with good things,
but those who’re rich, he sends away empty handed.
54 He took good care of his servant, Israel,
55 [ref]as he spoke to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his descendants,
at the right time.”
56 So Maria stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning back to her own home.
5 That’s why when Yeshua came into the world, he said:[ref]
“You don’t want sacrifice and offering,
but you prepared a body for me.
6 You took no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.
7 Then I said, ‘Listen, it’s been written about me in the scroll of the scriptures. I have come, God, to do whatever you want.’ ”
8 Previously he had said, ‘You don’t want sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and offerings for sin, and you didn’t take pleasure in them,’ even though they’re offered according to the law. 9 Then he said, ‘Listen, I’m coming to do whatever you want.’ So he was terminating the first agreement in order to be able to establish the second one. 10 By that agreement, we are made holy once-and-for-all through the offering of Yeshua Messiah’s body.
22:1 Yeshua’s return
6 Then he said to me, “These messages are faithful and true, and the master, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his messenger out to show his slaves what’s planned to happen soon.”
7 “Yes, listen, I’m coming soon. Whoever follows the messages of the prophecy on this scroll will be blessed.”
8 I, Yohan, am the one who saw and heard all those things, and when I heard and saw them, I knelt down to worship at the feet of the messenger who showed them to me. 9 But he told me, Hey, no! I’m a fellow slave of you and of your brothers the prophets and of the ones who obey the words of this book. Worship God.” 10 Then he continued, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near. 11 Those who disobey God can continue to do so and those who’re filthy can continue to be so, but those who obey God should continue to obey, and those who’re godly should continue to be godly.”[ref]
12 (Yeshua says,) “Listen, I’m coming back soon, bringing my reward to distribute to each person according to their behaviour.[ref] 13 I’m the A and the Z—the first and the last—the beginning and the end.[ref]
14 “Blessed are those who’re washing their robes so that they’ll have authority over the tree of life (MEANING???) and so that they’ll be able to enter the city through the gates.[ref] 15 On the contrary, those outside the city are dogs and sorcerers, the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone loving and exhibiting dishonesty.
16 “I, Yeshua, have sent my messenger to explain these things to you concerning the churches. I am both David’s source and his descendant—the bright morning star.”[ref]
17 The spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’[ref]
Anyone who hears this should also say, ‘Come.’
Anyone who’s thirsty to live forever should come. Anyone who wants it can take the water that gives life free of charge.
22:18 Farewell
18 [ref]I am testifying to everyone who hears the prophecies written in this document: If anyone adds to these words, then God will add to them the plagues written in this document. 19 And if anyone takes away any of this prophetic document, then God will take away their share in the tree of life and in the holy city that’s written about in this document.
20 The one who testified about these things says: ‘Yes, I’m coming quickly.’
May it be so. Come, master Yeshua.
21 May the grace from the master Yeshua be with the godly people.
