Advent week four

This page contains selected passages from the Open English Translation with the passage from the OET Readers’ Version on the left, and the OET Literal Version on the right. Minimal commentary is included (only some headings)—our aim is simply to conveniently list the passages in one place so that our readers can make up their own minds about what the writer of the passage was intending to communicate.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

OET Mic 5:2-5a

2But you, Beyt-Lekem (Bethlehem) Efratah,

even though you’re insignificant among Yehudah’s (Judah’s) clans,

out of you, one will come to me to rule in Yisrael,

whose beginning is from ancient times—

≈ from everlasting.[ref]

3Therefore God will hand them over to their enemies,

until the time when the woman in labour gives birth,

and the rest of his brothers return to the people of Yisrael.

4He’ll stand and shepherd his flock with Yahweh’s strength,

in the majesty of the name of his god Yahweh.

They’ll remain, because then he will be famous to the ends of the earth.

5That one will be our peace.

When the Assyrians come into our land

≈ and when they march against our fortresses,

then we’ll raise seven shepherds against them

≈ and eight leaders of men.

OET Luke 1:39-56

39Several days later, Maria determined that she’d go to the town in the hills of Yudea 40where Zekaryah and Elizabeth lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth, 41and as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting, her baby in her womb kicked, and she was filled with the holy spirit 42and she called out loudly, “Out of all women, you have been blessed and the baby in your womb has been blessed. 43How could this happen to me—that the mother of my master would come and visit me! 44You see, as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb kicked with excitement, 45and the woman who believed that everything Yahweh told her will happen, she will be blessed.”

46Maria said,

My soul praises Yahweh,

47and my spirit is so happy about God, my saviour,

48because he noticed his humble servant girl.[ref]

Look now, all the future generations will consider that I was blessed

49because the powerful one treated me incredibly,

and his name is holy.

50He shows his mercy to multiple generations;

to those who honour him.

51His arm is powerful;

he scatters those who are proud in their hearts.

52He knocks kings off their thrones,[ref]

and praises those who are humble.

53Those who are hungry, he fills with good things,

but those who are rich, he sends away empty handed.

54He took good care of his servant, Yisrael,

to be reminded of mercy

55as he spoke to our ancestors,[ref]

to Abraham and his descendants,

at the right time.”

56So Maria stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning back to her own home.

OET Heb 10:5-10

5That’s why when Yeshua came into the world, he said:[ref]

“You don’t want sacrifice and offering,

but you prepared a body for me.

6You took no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.

7Then I said, ‘Listen, it’s been written about me in the scroll of the scriptures. I have come, God, to do whatever you want.’ ”

8Previously he had said, ‘You don’t want sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and offerings for sin, and you didn’t take pleasure in them,’ even though they’re offered according to the law. 9Then he said, ‘Listen, I’m coming to do whatever you want.’ So he was terminating the first agreement in order to be able to establish the second one. 10By that agreement, we are made holy once-and-for-all through the offering of Yeshua Messiah’s body.

OET Rev 22:6-21

6Then he said to me, “These messages are faithful and true, and Yahweh, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his messenger out to show his slaves what’s planned to happen soon.”

7“Yes, listen, I’m coming soon. Whoever follows the messages of the prophecy on this scroll will be blessed.”

8I, Yohan, am the one who saw and heard all those things, and when I heard and saw them, I knelt down to worship at the feet of the messenger who showed them to me. 9But he told me, Hey, no! I’m a fellow slave of you and of your brothers the prophets and of the ones who obey the words of this book. Worship God.” 10Then he continued, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near. 11Those who disobey God can continue to do so and those who are filthy can continue to be so, but those who obey God should continue to obey, and those who are godly should continue to be godly.”[ref]

12(Yeshua says,)Listen, I’m coming back soon, bringing my reward to distribute to each person according to their behaviour.[ref] 13I’m the A and the Z—the first and the last—the beginning and the end.[ref]

14Blessed are those who are washing their robes so that they’ll have authority over the tree of life (MEANING???) and so that they’ll be able to enter the city through the gates.[ref] 15On the contrary, those outside the city are dogs and sorcerers, the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone loving and exhibiting dishonesty.

16“I, Yeshua, have sent my messenger to explain these things to you concerning the churches. I am both David’s source and his descendant—the bright morning star.”[ref]

17The spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’[ref]

Anyone who hears this should also say, ‘Come.’

Anyone who’s thirsty to live forever should come. Anyone who wants it can take the water that gives life free of charge.

22:18 Farewell

18I am testifying to everyone who hears the prophecies written in this document: If anyone adds to these words, then God will add to them the plagues written in this document.[ref] 19And if anyone takes away any of this prophetic document, then God will take away their share in the tree of life and in the holy city that’s written about in this document.

20The one who testified about these things says: ‘Yes, I’m coming quickly.’

May it be so. Come, master Yeshua.

21May the grace from the master Yeshua be with the godly people.
