Literal Version

1:1 Introduction

1Several people attempted to write an account about the events that we’re personally certain of 2as the ones who were eyewitnesses and hearers of these accounts from the beginning handed them over to us. 3So since we had followed all these events so carefully, it seemed like a good idea to write this account for you, honoured Theophilus, 4so that you could know the definite background behind what you were taught.

1Since many attempted to_draw_up a_description concerning the matters having_been_fully_assured among us, 2as the ones from the_beginning, having_become eyewitnesses and attendants of_the message, gave_ them _over to_us, 3it_supposed to_also_me having_followed originally with_all things exactly, to_write to_you consecutively, most_excellent Theofilos, 4in_order_that you_may_know the certainty concerning which of_the_messages you_were_instructed.

1:5 The messenger foretells the birth of Yohan-the-immerser

5[ref]It started with the priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth at the time when Herod was the king of Yudea. (Zechariah was in the priestly division of Abijah, and Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.) 6God considered them both good and blameless as they obeyed his commandments and regulations. 7Elizabeth had never been able to have a child, so there was just the two of them as they were now getting older.

8One time as he was taking his rostered turn to serve God along with his division, 9he was chosen by lot (this was how the priests assigned tasks) to light the incense in the temple, and so he proceeded inside. 10A lot of people would be praying outside the temple at the time when the incense was burnt. 11At that moment, a messenger from God appeared to Zechariah, standing right there at the right of the incense altar. 12Zechariah got a big fright at seeing him there and started to tremble. 13But the messenger spoke, “Don’t be scared Zechariah, because your request has been listened to, and your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son and you’ll name him Yohan. 14He’ll bring a lot of happiness to you and you’ll be proud of him—in fact many people will be glad. 15[ref]He’ll be considered special in God’s eyes, but he won’t be allowed to drink wine or spirits. Even while he’s still in his mother’s womb, he’ll be filled with God’s spirit. 16He will turn many children of Israel back to Yahweh, their God. 17[ref]And he will go on ahead of God with the spirit and the power of Eliyah, to turn fathers back to loving their children and to turn career criminals towards the wisdom of godly people, to get the people ready for the master.”

18Zechariah asked the messenger, “How will I know if this is true. Because I’m an older man and my wife is also getting old.”

19[ref]Now the messenger rebuked him, “I am Gabriel who stood right in front of God and was commanded to come here and talk to you, and to tell all of this to you. 20So hear this: Because you didn’t believe my message, you will be made silent and unable to speak until the day that all of these things happen, and they certainly will happen at the proper times.”

21Meanwhile, the people outside were expecting Zechariah to come back out, and were wondering what could be holding him up there inside the temple. 22But when he did emerge, he wasn’t able to speak to them. They wondering if maybe he’d seen a vision in the temple, and he nodded to confirm this although he remained mute. 23And after he’d finished his rostered days in the temple, he returned home.

24As time went on, Elizabeth became pregnant and secluded herself away for five months, saying, 25“The master[fn] has done this for me. At this time he’s looked down at me and taken away the public shame of my being childless.”

5It_became in the days of_Haʸrōdaʸs king of_ the _Youdaia, a_ certain _priest by_the_name Zaⱪarias of division of_Abia/(ʼAⱱīāh), and wife to_him of the daughters of_Aʼarōn/(ʼAhₐron), and the name of_her, Elisabet.
6And they_were both righteous before the god, blameless in pursuing all the commands and just_acts of_the master.
7And was to_them no child, as_much_as the Elisabet was barren, and both were having_advanced in the days of_them.
8And it_became in the time him to_be_ministering, before the god in the order of_the division of_him, 9according_to the custom of_the priestly_office, he_was_chosen_by_lot which to_burn_incense, having_come_in into the temple of_the master.
10And all the multitude of_the people was praying outside at_the hour of_the incense.
11And an_messenger of_the_master was_seen to_him, having_stood on the_right of_the altar of_the incense.
12And Zaⱪarias was_disturbed having_seen him, and fear fell_on on him.
13But the messenger said to him:
Be_ not _fearing, Zaⱪarias, because the petition of_you was_listened_to, and Elisabet the wife of_you will_be_bearing a_son to_you, and you_will_be_calling the name of_him Yōannaʸs.
14And will_be joy and exultation to_you, and many will_be_being_elated at the birth of_him.
15For/Because he_will_be great before the master, and by_no_means he_may_ not _drink wine and liquor, and he_will_be_being_filled of_the_ holy _spirit still from the_womb of_the_mother of_him.
16And he_will_be_turning_back many of_the sons of_Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl) to the_master, the god of_them.
17And he will_be_going_ahead before him in the_spirit and power with_Aʸlias/(ʼĒliyyāh), to_turn_back the_hearts of_the_fathers to the_children, and the_unpersuadable in the_understanding of_the_righteous, to_prepare for_the_master a_people having_been_prepared.
18And Zaⱪarias said to the messenger:
By what will_I_be_knowing this?
For/Because I am an_older_man, and the wife of_me having_advanced in the days of_her.
19And answering the messenger said to_him:
I am Gabriaʸl/(Gaⱱrīʼēl), the one having_stood_by before the god, and I_was_sent_out to_speak to you, and to_good_message_preach these things to_you.
20And see, you_will_be keeping_silent and not being_able to_speak, until that day these things may_become, because/for that you_ not _believed in_the messages of_me, which will_be_being_fulfilled in the season of_them.
21And the people was expecting the Zaⱪarias, and they_were_marvelling at the time to_be_delaying him in the temple.
22But having_come_out he_was_ not _able to_speak to_them, and they_recognized that he_has_seen a_vision in the temple.
And he was nodding to_them, and was_continuing mute.
23And it_became when the days of_the ministry of_him were_fulfilled, he_went_away to the home of_him.
24And after these the days Elisabet the wife of_him conceived, and was_secluding herself five months saying, 25that Thus the_master has_done to_me, in the_days in_which he_looked_upon, to_take_away the_disgrace of_me among people.

1:26 God’s messenger comes to Maria

26When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent his messenger Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in the Galilee region. 27[ref]Gabriel went to a young woman named Maria who was engaged to be married to Yosef, a descendant of King David, 28and entering the room, spoke to her, “Hello there. The master is with you and he’s chosen you to be honoured.” 29Maria was very puzzled by the statement and wondered what kind of greeting it could be 30as the messenger continued, “Don’t be scared, Maria, because you have found God’s favour 31[ref]and listen, you will conceive a baby and go on to give birth to a son, and you should name him Yeshua. 32[ref]He will be very special and will be called the son of the highest one, and God the master will give him the throne of David, his ancestor. 33He will reign over Yacob’s descendants throughout the ages, and his kingdom will never end.”

34“How would this work,” Maria asked the messenger, “because I’ve never slept with a guy?”

35“The holy spirit will come over you,” answered the messenger, “and the power of the highest one will overshadow you, and so the holy child that will be born will be called God’s son. 36Also, your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age—the one who was called barren is now six months pregnant 37[ref]because with God, his statements always come to pass.”

38Look here,” said Maria, “I’m the master’s servant girl. May everything you said come true.” Then the messenger left her.

26And in the the sixth month, the messenger Gabriaʸl was_sent_out by the god to a_city the of_Galilaia/(Gālīl), to_whose name was Nazaret, 27to a_virgin having_been_betrothed to_a_man, whose name was Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf), of the_house of_Dawid/(Dāvid), and the name of_the virgin was Maria/(Miryām).
28And having_come_in the messenger to her, said:
Greetings, having_been_favoured.
The master is with you.
29And she was_thoroughly_perplexed at the statement, and was_reasoning what_kind_of the greeting this might_be.
30And the messenger said to_her:
Be_ not _fearing, Maria, because/for you_found favour with the god.
31And see, you_will_be_conceiving in your_womb, and you_will_be_bearing a_son, and you_will_be_calling the name of_him Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).
32This one will_be great, and will_be_being_called the_son of_the_highest, and the_master the god will_be_giving to_him the throne of_Dawid, the father of_him, 33and he_will_be_reigning over the house of_Yakōb/(Yaˊₐqoⱱ), to the ages, and of_the kingdom of_him, will_ not _be an_end.
34And said Maria to the messenger:
How will_ this _be, because I_am_ not _knowing a_man?
35And answering the messenger said to_her:
The_ holy _spirit will_be_coming_over on you, and the_power of_the_highest will_be_overshadowing on_you, therefore also the holy child being_born will_be_being_called, son of_god.
36And see, Elisabet, the relative of_you, she also has_conceived a_son in the_old_age of_her, and this is sixth month to_her who was being_called barren.
37Because every message will_ not _be_unattaining with the god.
38And Maria/(Miryām) said:
Behold, the handmaiden of_the_master, might_it_become to_me according_to the message of_you.
And the messenger went_away from her.

1:39 Maria’s visit to Elizabeth

39Several days later, Maria determined that she’d go to the town in the hills of Yudea 40where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth, 41and as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting, her baby in her womb kicked, and she was filled with the holy spirit 42and she called out loudly, “Out of all women, you have been blessed and the baby in your womb has been blessed. 43How could this happen to me—that the mother of my master would come and visit me! 44You see, as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb kicked with excitement, 45and the woman who believed that everything the master told her will happen, she will be blessed.”

39And Maria having_risen_up in the these days, was_gone into the mountainous with earnestness, to a_city of_Youda/(Yəhūdāh), 40and she_came_in into the house of_Zaⱪarias, and greeted the Elisabet.
41And it_became, as the Elisabet heard the greeting of_ the _Maria, the baby kicked in the womb of_her, and the Elisabet was_filled with_the_ holy _spirit, 42and she_cried_out with_a_ loud _voice and said:
You having_been_blessed among women, and the fruit of_the womb of_you having_been_blessed.
43And from_where this to_me, that the mother of_the master of_me may_come to me?
44For/Because see, as the voice of_the greeting of_you became into the ears of_me, the baby in the womb of_me kicked in.
exultation.
45And blessed is the woman having_believed that there_will_be a_completion to_the things having_been_spoken to_her from the_master.

1:46 Maria’s song of praise

46Maria said,

My soul praises the master,

47and my spirit is so happy about God, my saviour,

48[ref]because he noticed his humble servant girl.

Look now, all the future generations will consider that I was blessed

49because the powerful one treated me incredibly,

and his name is holy.

50He shows his mercy to multiple generations;

to those who honour him.

51His arm is powerful;

he scatters those who are proud in their hearts.

52[ref]He knocks kings off their thrones,

and praises those who’re humble.

53Those who’re hungry, he fills with good things,

but those who’re rich, he sends away empty handed.

54He took good care of his servant, Israel,

to be reminded of mercy

55[ref]as he spoke to our ancestors,

to Abraham and his descendants,

at the right time.”

56So Maria stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning back to her own home.

46And Maria said:
The soul of_me is_magnifying the master,
47and the spirit of_me exulted in the god, the saviour of_me.
48Because he_looked_at on the humiliation of_the handmaiden of_him.
For/Because see, from the time now all the generations will_be_counting_ me _blessed.
49Because the powerful one did great things to_me, and the name of_him is holy.
50And the mercy of_him is to generations and generations, to_the ones revering him.
51He_did power with the_arm of_him, the_proud in_the_mind of_heart of_them he_scattered.
52He_took_down sovereigns from thrones, and exalted the_humble.
53He_filled hungering ones with_good things, and he_sent_away being_rich ones empty-handed.
54He_took_care of_Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl) servant of_him, to_be_reminded of_mercy, 55as he_spoke to the fathers of_us, to_ the _Abraʼam/(ʼAⱱrāhām) and to_the descendants of_him, because/for the age.
56And Maria/(Miryām) remained with her about three months, and returned to the home of_her.

1:57 The birth of Yohan-the-immerser

57When Elizabeth’s nine months were up, she gave birth and produced a son 58and her neighbours and relatives heard that the master had shown great mercy to her, and so they celebrated along with her.

59[ref]When the baby boy was eight days old, it was the time to circumcise him, and the relatives at the ceremony started calling him Zacharias after the name of his father, 60but the baby’s mother spoke up and said, “No, he’s going to be named Yohan.”

61“None of your relatives have that name,” they said 62and they signalled to the father to tell them what name he wanted for the baby.

63So Zacharias requested a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is Yohan.” Everyone was amazed 64and then suddenly his mouth and tongue were freed and he was able to speak again and started praising God. 65Everyone who lived nearby was a bit unnerved by all this, and the story about what happened was discussed in all the homes around the hills 66and those who heard about it were thinking to themselves, “Who’s this young child going to turn out to be?”

57And the to_Elisabet was_fulfilled the time, which her to_bear, and she_bore a_son.
58And the neighbors and the relatives of_her heard that the_master magnified the mercy of_him with her, and they_were_rejoicing_with with_her.
59And it_became on the the eighth day, they_came to_circumcise the little_child, and they_were_calling it Zaⱪarias after the name of_the father of_him.
60And having_been_answering the mother of_him said:
No, but he_will_be_being_called Yōannaʸs.
61And they_said to her, that No_one is of the relatives of_you, who is_being_called the by_ this _name.
62And they_were_signaling to_the father of_him, what the name wishfully he_might_be_wanting him to_be_being_called.
63And having_requested a_tablet, he_wrote saying:
Yōannaʸs is the_name of_him.
And all marvelled.
64And the mouth of_him was_opened_up immediately, and the tongue of_him, and he_was_speaking blessing the god.
65And fear became on all, the ones dwelling_around them, and in all the mountainous area of_ the _Youdaia all the these messages.
was_being_discussed.
66And all the ones having_heard put in the heart of_them, saying:
What consequently the this little_child will_be?
For/Because also the_hand of_the_master was with him.

1:67 Zacharias’ prophecy about Yohan

67Then the boy’s father, Zacharias, became filled with the holy spirit and prophesied,

68Blessed is the master, the god of Israel,

because he visited us and made a way for his people to be freed from slavery.

69He brought us a voice that would lead to our salvation,

us citizens of the nation of King David, his servant

70(as he spoke via the mouths of his holy prophets through the ages).

71He saved us from our enemies,

and from the power of all the ones hating us,

72to show mercy to our ancestors

and to remind them of his holy agreement,

73that he had promised Abraham, our ancestor, that he would give us.

74He rescued us from the power of our enemies,

so we could serve him without fear,

75committed to obeying him

for the rest of our lives.

76[ref]And you too my little child, will be called a prophet of the highest one—

going before the master to prepare his paths,

77to give knowledge about salvation to his people

so their sins can be forgiven

78because God has compassion on us and mercy.

Thus the light from heaven will visit us

79[ref]to shine on those in darkness and sitting in the shadow of death;

to guide us onto the road of peace.”

80The young boy grew and his spirit was also strengthened, and he lived in the wilderness until he started his ministry to the people of Israel.

1:25 Clearly referring to Yahweh. By this time in history, as a sign of respect the Jewish people had stopped saying God’s name aloud.

67And Zaⱪarias the father of_him, was_filled with_the_ holy _spirit and prophesied saying, 68Blessed is the_master the god of_ the _Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl), because he_visited and established redemption for_the people of_him, 69and raised a_horn of_salvation for_us, in the_house of_Dawid/(Dāvid), the_servant of_him, 70(as he_spoke by mouth the holy prophets of_him of the_age), 71salvation from of_the_enemies of_us, and from the_hand of_all the ones hating us, 72to_perform mercy with the fathers of_us, and to_be_reminded of_the_ holy _covenant of_him, 73the_oath which he_swore to Abraʼam/(ʼAⱱrāhām), the father of_us, which to_give to_us 74having_been_rescued out_of the_hand of_^our_enemies, to_be_ fearlessly, _serving unto_him 75in devoutness and righteousness before him, for_all the days of_us.
76And you also, little_child, will_be_being_called the_prophet of_the_highest:
for you_will_be_going_before before the_master to_prepare the_ways of_him,
77which to_give knowledge of_salvation to_the people of_him, in forgiveness of_sins of_them, 78because_of the_compassions of_the_mercy of_god of_us, in which the_rising from height will_be_visiting us, 79to_shine_upon upon_the ones in darkness and sitting in_the_shadow of_death, which to_direct the feet of_us into the_way of_peace.
80And the little_child was_growing and was_being_strengthened in_spirit, and was in the wildernesss until the_day of_appearance of_him to the Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl).
