Praise and Rejoicing in Luke–Acts
Throughout Luke’s Gospel, the recipients of God’s grace praise him for his wonderful deeds (Luke 1:44, 46, 64, 68; 2:13, 38; 5:25-26; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15-18; 18:43; 19:37; 24:53). In Acts, praise accompanies healings (3:8-9; 4:21-22) and the salvation of the Gentiles (Acts 11:18; 13:48; 21:19-20).
This motif of praise is closely linked to a key theme in Luke, that the fulfillment of God’s promise in the coming of Jesus the Messiah is a cause for joy and rejoicing. This theme emerges toward the beginning of the Gospel in the songs of Mary (Luke 1:46-55) and Zechariah (Luke 1:67-79). The Old Testament prophets had predicted that nature itself would break forth in songs of praise when God’s salvation arrived (see Isa 55:12). When Jesus entered Jerusalem at the end of his ministry, his disciples shouted and sang, “praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen” (Luke 19:37). The Pharisees called on Jesus to rebuke his disciples, but he responded, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” (19:37-40). At the end of the Gospel, the disciples “returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God” (24:52-53). The arrival of God’s marvelous salvation is a cause for rejoicing and praise.
Passages for Further Study
Isa 55:12; Luke 1:44-47, 64, 68; 2:13-14, 38; 5:25-26; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15-18; 18:43; 19:37-40; 24:51-53; Acts 2:47; 3:8-9; 4:21; 11:18; 13:48; 21:20
Soon after the angel visited Mary in Galilee, she went to visit her relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth lived in a town in Judea. Mary probably traveled from three to five days to reach there. The Holy Spirit revealed to Elizabeth that Mary was carrying the Christ/Messiah in her womb. This was confirmed also by Elizabeth’s baby, John, who leaped for joy in her womb. Elizabeth declared that Mary was blessed more than all women because God had chosen her for such an honor.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Elizabeth affirmed that God had blessed Mary
Elizabeth recognized that Mary would be the mother of the Christ
Blessed is she who has believed
You(sing) are favored/fortunate, you(sing) who believed
How good it is for you(sing) because you(sing) believed
Blessed is she who has believed: The phrase she who has believed refers specifically to Mary. Elizabeth was still speaking to her. In some languages it may be more natural to use a form such as “you.” For example:
Blessed are you who have believed
The Greek wordμακαρια. that the BSB translates as Blessed is different from the one that is translated as Blessed in 1:42b and 1:42c. It describes a person who is in a good situation. In the Bible, the good situation results from God showing favor/kindness to the person.
Some other ways to translate this word are:
Joyful/desirable is your situation because you have believed
How good/happy it is for you who have believed
You are favored/fortunate for believing
This word does not primarily refer to a feeling. However, a person in this good situation will frequently have good feelings such as happiness and joy. Do not use a word that only refers to material prosperity or physical health.
See bless, Meaning 3, in the Glossary.
she who has believed: The phrase who has believed identifies the one who is blessed. However, it also implies the reason why Mary was blessed. For example:
because you believed (CEV)
believed: In this context the word believed refers to having confidence in what the Lord said. Mary knew that the Lord would do what he had told her.
See believe, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.
that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”
that what the Lord said to you(sing) will really happen!”
that the Lord’s promise/message to you(sing) will come true!”
that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled: This clause refers to what Mary believed. She believed that what the Lord had told her would be done. The Greek words that the BSB translates as will be fulfilled are literally “there will be a fulfillment.” It means here that what the Lord said to Mary would be fulfilled. Another way to say this is:
that what the Lord said to you would really happen (NCV)
that the Lord would fulfill/do what he promised you
The phrase that the BSB translates as the Lord’s word to her is literally “the things spoken to her from the Lord.” This phrase refers to what God told Mary through the angel Gabriel (1:26–37). Some English versions describe this as a promise or a message. Others use a more general word such as “said.” Some other ways to translate this are:
that the Lord would keep his promise to you (GW)
that the Lord would do what he said (NLT)
that the Lord’s promise to her would be fulfilled (REB)
In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of some information in this verse. For example:
45aYou have believed 45bthat what the Lord said to you would happen. 45aSo how good it is for you!
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person
ἡ πιστεύσασα & τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ Κυρίου
the_‹woman› ˓having˒_believed & ˱to˲_the_‹things› ˓having_been˒_spoken ˱to˲_her (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρά Κυρίου)
Elizabeth is speaking to Mary, and these phrases describe Mary, but Elizabeth nevertheless speaks of her in the third person. She does this perhaps as a sign of respect, since she has just identified Mary as “the mother of my Lord.” Alternate translation: [you who believed … the message that the Lord sent you]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ Κυρίου
˱there˲_will_be ˓a˒_completion ˱to˲_the_‹things› ˓having_been˒_spoken ˱to˲_her (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρά Κυρίου)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [that the Lord would do everything he sent the angel to tell you]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ Κυρίου
˱there˲_will_be ˓a˒_completion ˱to˲_the_‹things› ˓having_been˒_spoken ˱to˲_her (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρά Κυρίου)
Here, instead of the word “by,” Elizabeth uses the word from because Mary actually heard the angel Gabriel speak (See: [1:26](../01/26.md)), but the things he spoke ultimately came from the Lord. Alternate translation: [that the Lord would do everything he sent the angel to tell you]
