TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:9 wash my hands and head as well: Peter misunderstood Jesus (cp. 2:19-20; 3:3-4). Peter thought that to have more water was to have more of Jesus. Only when Peter received the Spirit did everything become clear (e.g., see Acts 2:14-36).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

λέγει

/is/_saying

Here John uses the present tense in past narration in order to call attention to a development in the story.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

μὴ τοὺς πόδας μου μόνον,

not the feet ˱of˲_me only

Peter is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the context. Alternate translation: “wash not only my feet”
