OET (OET-LV)And_he_will_pitch the_tents_of his_palace_of_his between the_seas and_the_mountain_of the_beauty_of holiness and_he_will_come to end_of_his and_there_will_not_be a_helper to_him/it.

OET (OET-RV)He’ll erect his royal tents between the seas and the beautiful holy mountain, but that northern king will come to his end, and no one will help him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:40–45

This paragraph describes the final battles and end of the despicable king of the north.

11:45a

He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain,

He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain: There is a question of interpretation here regarding where the king would camp. The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as sea is plural. However, many commentators think that it refers to the Mediterranean alone. The two possibilities are:

  1. the king will camp between the sea (the Mediterranean) and the holy mountain. For example:

He shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain. (NRSV) (BSB, RSV/NRSV, ESV, NJB, NCV, CEV, NLT, GNT, NABRE)

  2. the king will camp between the seas (the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea). For example:

He will pitch his royal tents between the seas toward the beautiful holy mountain. (NET) (KJV, NASB, NIV, GW, NET)

It is recommended that you follow option (1), following the majority of English versions.

pitch his royal tents: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as his royal tents refers to the big luxurious tents that the king used to stay in when he was with his army in war time. To pitch tents means to set them up. So other ways to translate this include:

pitch his royal pavilion (REB)

set up his huge royal tents (GNT)

11:45b

but he will meet his end with no one to help him.

but he will meet his end: The clause he will meet his end here means that the evil king will die.

with no one to help him: This clause indicates that the king would die alone, without comfort and assistance. Here are some other ways to translate this:

with no one to help him (NRSV)

with none to help him (ESV)

No one will give him any help.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְיִטַּע֙ אָהֳלֶ֣י אַפַּדְנ֔וֹ

and,he_will_pitch tents_of his_palace_of,his

Here the angel is speaking as if this king would plant his tents the way a person plants a tree. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [And he will securely establish his royal tents]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

אָהֳלֶ֣י אַפַּדְנ֔וֹ

tents_of his_palace_of,his

The angel is using the possessive form to describe tents that are characterized by belonging to his palace. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the tents of his royal court]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

וּבָא֙ עַד־קִצּ֔וֹ

and,he_will_come until end_of,his

The angel is referring to the death of this king in a polite way by using the phrase he will come to his end. Depending on what is helpful for your readers, you could use a polite way of referring to this in your language, or you could state this plainly. Alternate translation: [But he will pass away]
