OET (OET-LV)And_you_all write on the_Jews as_the_fit in/on/at/with_see_you_all in/on_name_of the_king and_seal in/on/at/with_signet_ring the_king DOM a_writing which [is]_written in/on_name_of the_king and_sealed in/on/at/with_signet_ring the_king there_[was]_not to_revoked.

OET (OET-RV) But as you both know, no one can revoke a letter that has my name and my official seal on it. So this is what you should do: write a new letter to help the Jews, as you think best and put my name on it and seal the letter with my signet ring.”

uW Translation Notes:

וְ֠אַתֶּם

and,you_all

Alternate translation: “so this is what you should do”

כִּתְב֨וּ עַל־הַיְּהוּדִ֜ים כַּטּ֤וֹב בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙

write on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,Jews as_the,fit in/on/at/with,see,you_all

Alternate translation: “I am giving you permission to write other letters to save your people”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

כַּטּ֤וֹב בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙

as_the,fit in/on/at/with,see,you_all

Here, eyes represent the action of seeing, and seeing is a metaphor for knowledge, notice, attention, or judgment. This phrase means that Esther and Mordecai have permission to write what they think is best. Alternate translation: “as you think is best” or “what you think is best”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּשֵׁ֣ם הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

in/on=name_of the=king

Here, name is a metaphor meaning authority. This phrase means Esther and Mordecai have permission to write with the authority of the King Ahasuerus.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

בְּשֵׁ֣ם הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

in/on=name_of the=king

King Ahasuerus refers to himself in the third person. You can have him say this in the first person. Alternate translation: “I give you permission to write with my own authority”

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

בְּטַבַּ֣עַת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

in/on/at/with,signet_ring the=king

This is a special ring that could be used to imprint the king’s official seal on a law or decree. Alternate translation: “the ring that has my official seal on it”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

בְּטַבַּ֣עַת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

in/on/at/with,signet_ring the=king

King Ahasuerus refers to himself in the third person. You can have him say this in the first person. Alternate translation: “the ring that has my official seal on it”

Note 6 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּֽי

that/for/because/then/when

Here, King Ahasuerus is expressing the reason why he cannot simply revoke the first letter and also why Esther and Mordecai can write another letter that people must obey. Alternate translation: “you see” or “people will obey your letter because”

אֵ֥ין לְהָשִֽׁיב

not to,revoked

As in verse 5, this expression means “revoke.” Alternate translation: “no one can revoke” or “no one can nullify”

כְתָ֞ב & אֵ֥ין לְהָשִֽׁיב

document & not to,revoked

If it would be helpful in your language, you could put this first in the verse because it explains why Ahasuerus answers Esther and Mordecai in the way that he does. See the UST.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

כְתָ֞ב אֲשֶׁר־נִכְתָּ֣ב בְּשֵׁם־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וְנַחְתּ֛וֹם בְּטַבַּ֥עַת הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

document which/who written in/on=name_of the=king and,sealed in/on/at/with,signet_ring the=king

The king is describing a general situation, but he has Haman’s letter specifically in mind. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say that explicitly. Alternate translation: “Haman wrote his letter with my authority, and he sealed it with the ring that has my official seal on it. No one can revoke a letter like that” (The story explained in 1:19 that the king’s laws could not be changed once they had been made and proclaimed.)

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:8 According to Persian law, whatever has already been written . . . can never be revoked (see 1:19; Dan 6:8, 12; cp. Ps 148:6). However, a new decree with the king’s royal seal could give different or competing directions.
