SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–7: The LORD will judge the people of Israel and Judah

In 5:1–4, the LORD condemned the people of Israel and Judah, including the priests and leaders, for their corruption, immorality, and idolatry. In 5:5–7, he warned them that he would leave them and allow them to be destroyed.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

Israel and Judah will be judged (CEV)

Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah (ESV)

Paragraph 5:1–4

In this paragraph, the LORD made an accusation against the people of Israel. He made it clear that he knew everything they did. Nothing was hidden from him. He concluded by declaring that his people no longer knew him.

Since this paragraph occurs at the beginning of a new section, it may be helpful in some languages to make explicit that the LORD is the one who was speaking. For example, the CEV begins this paragraph with:

The Lord said (CEV)

Here is another way to introduce the paragraph:

The LORD continued to speak. He said

5:4a

Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God,

Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God: This clause is a figure of speech (personification). It describes evil deeds as if they have the ability to control a person.

Here are some ways to translate this figure of speech:

deeds: The word deeds refers here to the evil things that people do.

5:4b

for a spirit of prostitution is within them,

for a spirit of prostitution is within them: This clause means that their thoughts and decisions are motivated by their strong desire to be immoral and to worship idols.

spirit of prostitution: See the note on spirit of prostitution in 4:12c.

is within them: This phrase refers to attitudes and thoughts. Some languages use a body organ, such as the liver, to signify attitudes and thoughts. Use an expression that is natural in your language for this purpose.

Here is another way to translate this line:

A spirit of prostitution is in their heart (NIV)

5:4c

and they do not know the LORD.

and they do not know the LORD: In Hebrew, this clause is literally “the LORD they do not know.” It means that they do not know the LORD or have a relationship with him. They do not know what the LORD wants his people to do. It is implied that they do not acknowledge his authority or obey him. See the note on “no knowledge of God” in 4:1d, where it probably has the same meaning.

uW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) for the mind of adultery is in them

(Some words not found in UHB: not permit deeds_of,their to,return to/towards God_of,their that/for/because/then/when spirit_of whoredom [is]_in,their_inner_of,being and=DOM YHWH not know )

This means they have the desire to be unfaithful to God. They want to worship idols.

(Occurrence 0) to turn to God … they do not know Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: not permit deeds_of,their to,return to/towards God_of,their that/for/because/then/when spirit_of whoredom [is]_in,their_inner_of,being and=DOM YHWH not know )

The translator can represent this as “to turn to me … they do not know me,” or “to turn to me … they do not know me, Yahweh.”

(Occurrence 0) they do not know Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: not permit deeds_of,their to,return to/towards God_of,their that/for/because/then/when spirit_of whoredom [is]_in,their_inner_of,being and=DOM YHWH not know )

Israel no longer obeys Yahweh in any way. They do not acknowledge Yahweh as their God.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:4 Israel’s idolatrous practices were so ingrained that they were apparently powerless to return to the Lord.
• You are a prostitute through and through (literally the spirit of prostitution is within them): Israel’s sin was not simply a behavior; it was the nation’s essential nature. They instinctively preferred the corrupt to the pure. Only through God’s work of salvation could Israel escape.
