OET (OET-LV)With_flock[s]_of_their and_with_herd[s]_of_their they_will_go to_seek DOM YHWH and_not they_will_find_him he_has_withdrawn from_them.

OET (OET-RV)They’ll go to inquire from Yahweh, taking their flocks and herds for sacrifices,
⇔ but they won’t hear from him because he’s withdrawn from them.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–7: The LORD will judge the people of Israel and Judah

In 5:1–4, the LORD condemned the people of Israel and Judah, including the priests and leaders, for their corruption, immorality, and idolatry. In 5:5–7, he warned them that he would leave them and allow them to be destroyed.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

Israel and Judah will be judged (CEV)

Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah (ESV)

Paragraph 5:5–7

In this paragraph, the LORD told the people of Israel and Judah that because they arrogantly refused to stop their sin, he would withdraw from them and allow them to be destroyed. This withdrawal and destruction is part of the discipline he spoke about in 5:2.

5:6

In this verse, Hosea describes one aspect of the coming judgment. When the people go to a place of worship to ask for the LORD’s help, he will not be there.

5:6a

They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they do not find Him;

The BSB follows the Hebrew by not having a conjunction here, but in some languages it may be helpful to use a word to introduce the clause.

Here are some ways to introduce the clause:

Any of these translation options accurately describes the relationship between these two clauses. Use an option that is natural in your language.

They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD: This clause describes a time when the people go to a shrine or other place of worship to ask the LORD for help or guidance.

They: This pronoun probably refers to the people of both kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD: The people bring their flocks and herds so that they can offer them in worship as sacrifices to the LORD. In some languages, it may be helpful to make some of this information explicit. For example:

They go with sacrifices of sheep and cattle to seek the Lord (REB)

They will come to worship the Lord, bringing their flocks and herds (NCV)

flocks and herds: The word flocks refers to small animals such as sheep and goats. The word herds refers to large animals such as cows or oxen.Hubbard (page 115). These words also imply large numbers of animals.

they do not find Him: This phrase means that the LORD will not be present in their times of worship. Even though they offer many animal sacrifices, the LORD will reject the people and will not answer their prayers.

5:6b

He has withdrawn Himself from them.

He has withdrawn Himself from them: This is the reason the people will not find the LORD. It is because he has withdrawn himself from them. He has abandoned them and will no longer accept their sacrifices or help them.

Here is another way to translate this clause:

for he has left them (GNT)

It is suggested that you add a footnote here that gives the LORD’s warnings in Deuteronomy 31:17–18, 32:20 as a cross-reference.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:6-7 The people might think that they could win God’s favor with their sacrifices, but Hosea warned them that they would not find him; God had left them to the consequences of their sin.
