SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:8–15: The LORD will judge the people by war

In 5:8–11, the LORD warned Israel and Judah that he would soon destroy them by means of the enemy that had come to wage war against them. He also accused them of various kinds of sin. In 5:12–15, the LORD compared his judgment to destructive things like a moth, wood rot, and a lion. He assured the people that they would be destroyed in spite of their attempt to get help from Assyria. We do not know with certainty the date and the details of the war. However, some scholars believe that this is the war that is mentioned in 2 Kings 16:5–9 and 2 Chronicles 28:5–23.This may be the Syro-Ephraimite war, 735–732 B.C.E. In that war the kingdoms of Israel and Syria united to fight against the kingdoms of Assyria and Judah. The war greatly harmed both Israel and Judah. Israel and Syria lost the war, and the king of Assyria took control of most of the land of Israel. See Andersen and Freedman (pages 402–403), Hubbard (pages 118–122), Stuart (page 101), and Macintosh (page 194) for more details.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

War between Judah and Israel (GNT)

The Lord warns Israel and Judah (CEV)

5:10

In this verse, the focus shifts from the northern kingdom of Israel to the southern kingdom of Judah.

5:10a

The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary stones;

The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary stones: This statement is a simile. In this simile, the princes of Judah are compared to people who move a “landmark” (ESV) or “boundary markers” (NET). This was clearly prohibited in Deuteronomy 19:14 and Deuteronomy 27:17.

Scholars do not know specifically how Judah’s princes were similar to people who moved boundary markers. Most scholars think that this verse refers to a wartime event in which Judah annexed land that belonged to Israel. These scholars include Andersen and Freedman, Macintosh, Stuart, Hubbard, and Davies. The GNT has followed this interpretation. It has: “the leaders of Judah have invaded Israel and stolen land from her.” Unfortunately, it is not possible to identify a particular historical event. Some scholars think that this verse refers instead to figurative/spiritual boundaries (Keil, Wood) or to other violations of human rights (McComiskey). Because of this uncertainty, it is recommended that you not follow a specific interpretation, as the GNT has done. However, we do know that people did this in order to steal land from their neighbors.

Here are some ways to translate this figure of speech:

The princes of Judah: This phrase refers to those who rule the kingdom of Judah. It includes the king, his officials, and military leaders.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

The rulers of Judah (NJB)

Those who govern/rule Judah

5:10b

I will pour out My fury upon them like water.

I will pour out My fury upon them like water: This verse part describes the LORD’s response to the sin of the leaders of Judah. As a result of their sin, he will punish them severely. In some languages, it may be necessary to make this connection explicit. For example:

So… (GNT)

that’s why… (CEV)

The LORD’s fury is compared here to water. In this context, it implies a large quantity of water, such as in a flood. Here are some of the ways in which his anger is like water:

  1. The amount of both is great and overwhelming.

  2. Both cause great destruction.

Here are some other ways to translate this simile:

I will pour out punishment on them like a flood (GNT)

I will pour out my wrath on them like a flood of water (NIV)

I will flood them with my anger (CEV)

In some languages, verbs like pour out cannot be used with words like “wrath” or “punishment.”

Here are some other ways to translate this simile:

I will punish them severely. It will be as if a terrible flood carries them away.

I am very angry at them. I will destroy them like a flood.

fury: This word refers here to the LORD’s fierce anger that he expresses when he judges or punishes people.

Here are some other ways to translate this word:

punishment (GNT)

rage (NET)

uW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh is talking about Judah and Israel.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) The leaders of Judah are like those who move a boundary stone

(Some words not found in UHB: they_were princes_of Yehuda like,[those_who]_displace_of border on,them pour_out like,water wrath_of,my )

To “move a boundary stone” refers to moving the landmark that marked the border of some property, which was a crime under Israelite law.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) I will pour my wrath on them like water

(Some words not found in UHB: they_were princes_of Yehuda like,[those_who]_displace_of border on,them pour_out like,water wrath_of,my )

Yahweh’s wrath against Judah will be like a large stream of water that destroys them. In the scriptures, emotions and moral qualities are often spoken of as if they were liquids.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:10 thieves (literally those who move a boundary marker): The Lord was the owner of the land, which he entrusted to the tribes following the conquest (see Josh 13:8–19:51). To move a boundary marker and change God’s allotted boundaries was to steal from God (Deut 19:14). Such an act rightly invoked divine punishment (Deut 27:17).
