SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:8–15: The LORD will judge the people by war

In 5:8–11, the LORD warned Israel and Judah that he would soon destroy them by means of the enemy that had come to wage war against them. He also accused them of various kinds of sin. In 5:12–15, the LORD compared his judgment to destructive things like a moth, wood rot, and a lion. He assured the people that they would be destroyed in spite of their attempt to get help from Assyria. We do not know with certainty the date and the details of the war. However, some scholars believe that this is the war that is mentioned in 2 Kings 16:5–9 and 2 Chronicles 28:5–23.This may be the Syro-Ephraimite war, 735–732 B.C.E. In that war the kingdoms of Israel and Syria united to fight against the kingdoms of Assyria and Judah. The war greatly harmed both Israel and Judah. Israel and Syria lost the war, and the king of Assyria took control of most of the land of Israel. See Andersen and Freedman (pages 402–403), Hubbard (pages 118–122), Stuart (page 101), and Macintosh (page 194) for more details.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

War between Judah and Israel (GNT)

The Lord warns Israel and Judah (CEV)

5:9

In this verse, the LORD is again the speaker. He describes what will certainly happen to the land and people of Israel when he punishes them.

5:9a

Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of rebuke.

Ephraim will be laid waste: In Hebrew, this clause is literally “Ephraim will become a waste/horror.”According to NIDOTTE (#9014), the basic meaning of this Hebrew word is “that which causes horror” when someone sees it. TWOT (#2409d) similarly defines this word as “waste, horror, appallment,” and says that it “stresses the horror caused by the desolation of judgment.” It indicates that an enemy will destroy the cities and fields of Israel, leaving the land deserted. It also indicates that when people see the terrible destruction, the sight will cause them to feel horrified.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

Israel will be ruined (GNT)

you will become a heap of rubble (NLT)

the destruction of Israel will cause horror in anyone who sees it

Ephraim: In this context, the word Ephraim is probably a figure of speech (synecdoche) that represents the land of Israel. This use of the word is slightly different from its use in 5:3a, 5:3c, and 5:5b, where it represents the people rather than the land. See the note on “Ephraim…Israel” at 5:3a–b.

on the day of rebuke: In Hebrew, the phrase day of rebuke could also be translated as the “day of punishment.”The BART interlinear has “rebuke.” NIDOTTE (#9349) glosses this word as “rebuke, correction, punishment.” It refers to the time when the LORD will punish the people. In this context, the word day refers to a period of time. It does not refer to a literal day.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

the time for punishment (GW)

the day of punishment (GNT)

In some languages, it may be more natural to place this phrase at the beginning of the clause. It may also be necessary to make explicit the one who will punish the people. For example:

When the time comes for me to punish the people of Israel, I, the Lord, will destroy their land.

5:9b

Among the tribes of Israel I proclaim what is certain.

Among the tribes of Israel I proclaim what is certain: Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

This is the certain doom I have decreed for Israel’s tribes. (REB)

What I am declaring to the tribes of Israel will certainly take place! (NET)

People of Israel, this will surely happen! (GNT)

I proclaim: In Hebrew, this phrase is literally “I make known.”

Here are some other ways to translate this word:

I will make…known (GW)

I tell (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) Among the tribes of Israel I have declared what is certain to happen

(Some words not found in UHB: ʼEfrayim (into)_a,waste become in/on=day punishment among,the_tribes_of Yisrael declare sure )

Alternate translation: “I will do to the tribes of Israel what I have declared”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:8-9 Hosea sounded the alarm to warn the Israelites of God’s coming judgment. Because of their sins, the Lord had become Israel’s enemy and would punish them.
• Gibeah, Ramah, and Beth-aven (Bethel) are all cities in the tribal territory of Benjamin.
