SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:10–17: The sins of the Israelites and the response of the LORD

This section describes the joyful beginning of the LORD’s relationship with the people of Israel and the shocking way that they responded by betraying him. Because of their sin and betrayal, it is necessary for the LORD to judge them.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

Israel’s Sin and Its Consequences (GNT)

Sin’s Terrible Results (CEV)

Paragraph 9:10–13 and 9:14

In the BSB and some other versions, 9:10–14 are one paragraph. TN will divide 9:10–14 into two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, the LORD is the speaker. He contrasts his love toward Israel with Israel’s betrayal of him in return. In the second paragraph, Hosea offers a prayer to the LORD in response to the LORD’s words.

9:11a

Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird,

Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird: This clause is a simile that compares the glory of Ephraim to a bird that flies away. It indicates that Israel will lose its glory. The context of 9:11b through 9:14 suggests that Ephraim’s glory probably refers here to the population of Israel.McComiskey (page 149), Wood (page 206) and Keil (page 125). The LORD will punish the people by withdrawing his blessing of fertility. Their population will decrease because they can no longer have children.

glory: In this context, the word glory probably means “abundant” in reference to the number of people.NIDOTTE (#3883). NIDOTTE (page 578) says “When a group of people is called heavy, it has the nuance numerous or abundant.”

9:11b

with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.

with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception: These phrases are more literally “no child bearing and no womb and no conception.” They further explain what will happen when “Ephraim’s glory” flies away.Hubbard (page 165). The women of Israel will be barren.

Note the order of the phrases no birth, no pregnancy, no conception. This is a reversal of the natural order, which is conception, pregnancy and then birth. This reverse order may indicate increasing severity of the punishment.Davies (page 228). None of the steps necessary for Israel to survive as a nation will occur: not birth, not pregnancy, not even conception.Hubbard (page 165).

Some versions change the order of these phrases. It is recommended that you keep the order as it is here unless there is good reason in your language to change it.Andersen and Freedman (page 543) adds that rearranging the order here ignores the subtlety and originality of the prophet.

In some languages, it may be helpful to use phrases instead of single words to make the meaning clearer. For example:

there will be no more children born to them, no more women pregnant, no more children conceived (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh is speaking.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) their glory will fly away like a bird

(Some words not found in UHB: ʼEfrayim's like,bird fly_away glory_of,their from,giving_birth and,from,womb and,from,conception )

The people of Ephraim, or the northern kingdom of Israel, will lose everything that makes other nations respect them. Their glory will quickly disappear, as a bird flies away. Alternate translation: “their glory will be like a bird that flies away from them”
