SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–9: The LORD will punish the Israelites

This section warns the people of Israel that the LORD will punish them because they have been unfaithful to him. When that happens, the people will no longer be able to celebrate at harvest time or enjoy the crops from their land. The section describes aspects of daily life that the people in Israel would clearly understand. Some examples are harvest festivals (9:1, 5), threshing grain and making wine (9:2), unclean food (9:3–4), offerings and sacrifices (9:4), briers and thorns (9:6), and prophets (9:7–8). There is also an indirect reference to Israel’s past (9:9).

Here are some other examples of section headings:

The Lord Will Punish Israel (ESV)

Hosea announces Israel’s Punishment (NLT)

Israel Will Be Punished (CEV)

The Sorrows of Exile (NJB)

Paragraph 9:1–6

This paragraph tells about joyful activities that the people will no longer experience when they are in exile in Assyria. In exile, they will no longer have joyful harvests or be able to offer acceptable sacrifices to God. Instead of rejoicing, they will mourn.

9:3

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

3a They will not remain in the land of the LORD;

3b Ephraim will return to Egypt

3c and eat unclean food in Assyria.

This verse explains why the people will not have grain to eat or wine to drink in Israel. It is because their enemy will take them from Israel to live in exile in Assyria.Hubbard (page 157). The first line states the general fact. The second and third lines give more specific details.Andersen and Freedman (page 524).

9:3a

They will not remain in the land of the LORD;

They will not remain in the land of the LORD: This line states that the people will not continue to live in Israel.

Here are some other ways to translate this line:

You may no longer stay here in the Lord’s land. (NLT)

and you will have to leave

the land of the Lord (CEV)

the land of the LORD: This phrase occurs only here in the Old Testament. It indicates that the land of Israel belongs to the LORD, not to the people. It is his choice to give his land to people as a blessing or to take it away from them as a judgment.Davies (page 215).

9:3b

Ephraim will return to Egypt

Ephraim will return to Egypt: This line is an indirect reference to Israel’s past. Long ago the people were slaves in the land of Egypt. Here the phrase return to Egypt does not mean that the people will literally return to that land. Rather, it means that the people of Israel will become slaves in a foreign land as they were in Egypt.Commentaries that express this view include Stuart, Macintosh, Wood, Hubbard, Davies, Keil, and McComiskey.

The NCV makes this meaning explicit:

Israel will return to being captives as they were in Egypt (NCV)

Ephraim: Again, the name Ephraim is a figure of speech that refers to the nation of Israel. Some versions translate it as “Israel” (NCV). Others use a pronoun such as “you” (NLT) or “they” (GW).

9:3c

and eat unclean food in Assyria.

and eat unclean food in Assyria: In this line, Hosea makes explicit that Assyria is the foreign country where the people will become slaves. In Assyria, the Israelites will depend on their captors for their food. This will include some food that the LORD told the people not to eat. See Leviticus 11.

uW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Hosea the prophet is speaking.

(Occurrence 0) Yahweh’s land

(Some words not found in UHB: not remain in=land YHWH and,he_will_return ʼEfrayim Miʦrayim/(Egypt) and,in,Assyria unclean eat )

This expression signals that Yahweh continues to view the land of Israel as his property, not the property of the Israelites.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) unclean food

(Some words not found in UHB: not remain in=land YHWH and,he_will_return ʼEfrayim Miʦrayim/(Egypt) and,in,Assyria unclean eat )

This is food that the Israelites would normally refuse to eat because it would make them unacceptable to Yahweh.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:3 God would exile the Israelites to Assyria in 722 BC. There, in an unclean land, they would eat ceremonially unclean food, further separating themselves from their covenant with the Lord.
