Note 1 topic: headings
If you are using section headings, you could put one here before verse 1. Suggested heading: “Recognizing the Spirit of God”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
ἀγαπητοί
beloved
See how you translated Beloved in 2:7. Alternate translation: [You people whom I love]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
μὴ παντὶ πνεύματι πιστεύετε, ἀλλὰ δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα
not ˱in˲_every spirit /be/_believing but /be/_approving the spirits
John is speaking of a prophet by association with the spirit that would inspire a prophet to speak. Alternate translation: [do not believe every prophet; instead, consider carefully what prophets say]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
εἰ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν
whether of ¬the God ˱it˲_is
John uses the expression from God in various ways in this letter. Here it refers to origin. Alternate translation: [in order to determine whether God has sent them] or [in order to determine whether God is inspiring them]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
εἰ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν
whether of ¬the God ˱it˲_is
This sentence leaves out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words. Alternate translation: [to see whether they are from God or whether they are not from God]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
ἐξεληλύθασιν εἰς τὸν κόσμον
/have/_come_out into the world
John uses world to mean various things in this letter. Here it refers to the people living in the world. Alternate translation: [are out there speaking to people]
4:1 everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit (literally every spirit): The teachers who left John’s churches claimed to be prophets, but the true prophet is an instrument for the Holy Spirit’s messages (Acts 4:25; 1 Tim 4:1; Rev 19:10). Every speaker should be tested against what the Holy Spirit has said through the apostles (1 Jn 4:2-3, 6).
OET (OET-LV) Beloved, not be_believing in_every spirit, but be_approving the spirits, whether it_is of the god, because many false_prophets have_come_out into the world.
OET (OET-RV) Dear friends, don’t trust every spirit, but test them to determine whether or not it’s from God, because many false prophets go around the world.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
