OET (OET-LV) By this we_are_knowing that we_are_loving the children of_ the _god:
whenever we_are_loving the god, and we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him.
Read 4:7–5:12 carefully.
Section Theme: In this section John gives two reasons why we should love one another:
4:7–12 | God has shown us what true love is by sending his Son to die for us. |
4:13–21 | God has loved us so much that we have a duty to love others. |
At the end of the section, in 5:1–12, he shows how it is believing in Jesus that enables us to both love and obey God.
Read 5:1–5 in both BSB and GNT. Compare the two versions.
Paragraph Theme: These verses show that believing in Jesus is what makes us all fellow Christians. They also show that if we believe in Jesus we have power to love and to obey God’s commands.
By this we know that we love the children of God:
So we(incl) know certainly that we are truly loving God’s children
By this: (Alternative Interpretations) There are two views as to what the word this refers to:
It is probably giving emphasis to the second half of the verse.
Some think it refers back to the idea in 5:1 that whenever we love someone we also love their children. (NEB)
when we love God and keep His commandments.
if/when we are loving God and are doing what he has told us to do.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τά τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅταν τόν Θεόν ἀγαπῶμεν καί τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν)
This is an idiomatic expression that John uses many times in this letter. Alternate translation: [This is how we know that]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τὰ τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τά τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅταν τόν Θεόν ἀγαπῶμεν καί τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν)
Since John says in the previous verse that God is the spiritual father of believers, by the children of God he means other believers. Alternate translation: [our fellow believers]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τά τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅταν τόν Θεόν ἀγαπῶμεν καί τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν)
Here, keep is an idiom that means “obey.” Alternate translation: [we obey his commandments]
5:1-5 Those who believe that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God have been born spiritually as children of God (see John 20:31). Such people are empowered by the Spirit of God to love him and others, and by their faith to obey God and overcome the evil temptations of the world. Through faith, they can love God and live in obedience to him.
OET (OET-LV) By this we_are_knowing that we_are_loving the children of_ the _god:
whenever we_are_loving the god, and we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
