OET (OET-LV)Therefore chosen_one/messiah having_suffered in_the_flesh, also you_all arm the same intention, because the one having_suffered in_the_flesh has_ceased from_sin,

OET (OET-RV)Since the messiah suffered physically, you all also should cultivate the same intention, because anyone who suffers physically stops sinning

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

οὖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Χριστοῦ Οὖν παθόντος σαρκί καί ὑμεῖς τήν αὐτήν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε ὅτι ὁ παθών σαρκί πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας)

Therefore here refers back to what Peter has said about Jesus’ suffering in [3:18](../03/18.md). If it might help your readers, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [Considering what I have written about Christ’s suffering]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

σαρκὶ & σαρκὶ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Χριστοῦ Οὖν παθόντος σαρκί καί ὑμεῖς τήν αὐτήν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε ὅτι ὁ παθών σαρκί πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας)

Here, flesh refers to the human body, which is made of flesh. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [in the body … in the body]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὑμεῖς τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε

you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Χριστοῦ Οὖν παθόντος σαρκί καί ὑμεῖς τήν αὐτήν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε ὅτι ὁ παθών σαρκί πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας)

Here Peter uses arm yourselves to refer to preparing one’s mind for something. As soldiers get their weapons ready for battle, so should Christians be mentally prepared to suffer for their faith. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning plainly or use a simile. Alternate translation: [prepare your minds with the same way of thinking]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Χριστοῦ Οὖν παθόντος σαρκί καί ὑμεῖς τήν αὐτήν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε ὅτι ὁ παθών σαρκί πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας)

Here Peter uses the same way of thinking to refer to Jesus’ way of thinking when he suffered. If this might confuse your readers, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [with the same way of thinking about suffering that Christ had when he suffered]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας

˓has˒_ceased ˱from˲_sin

Here, ceased from sin means “no longer living with a sinful mindset.” The idea is that suffering because of one’s faith indicates that a person is not living sinfully. Christians are often persecuted by unbelievers because they refuse to act sinfully. This phrase does not mean that Christians who suffer never sin. If this might confuse your readers, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [has stopped living sinfully]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:1 since Christ suffered physical pain: Peter introduced this idea in 3:18; he now indicates its significance in Christian experience. In our own physical sufferings, we are to imitate Christ’s attitude (see 2:21-24). Our suffering with Christ shows that we have identified with him (see Rom 8:17). Those who identify with Christ experience the victory over the power of sin that he won on the cross (Rom 6:1-10).
