OET (OET-LV)But dress_in the master Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, and for_the flesh provision not be_making, because/for its desires.

OET (OET-RV)Instead, cover yourselves with the master Yeshua Messiah, and don’t be giving in to physical lusts and desires.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 13:11–14: Live the right way

In this section, Paul used several metaphors to encourage the Roman believers to live properly. He said they should live decent lives in the present time as they waited for their final salvation to arrive. He compared them to people sleeping at night, and said the time had arrived for them to wake up. He also said they should stop following behavior that belongs to the darkness and which only satisfies their sinful nature. Instead they should put on the qualities of the Lord Jesus Christ like putting on clothing. He described those qualities as “the armor of light.”

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Live/Walk in the light and power of God

Be active in your faith and serve God through his power

13:14a

Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,

Instead: This word indicates contrast to orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, sensuality, quarreling, and jealousy. But 13:13 says we are not to do those things. Some languages would not see contrast here to not doing those things. For example:

Let your armour… (NJB)

Rather than doing those things,

clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ: This is a figure of speech that indicates that a believer should have the same thinking and behavior as Jesus.

In some languages a literal translation would have the wrong meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

13:14b

and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.

make no provision: This phrase refers to thinking about something ahead of time and plan what you will do about it. Here it indicates planning ways to fulfill the desires of the body. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

make no plans

do not think about how to make happy

for the desires: The Greek is literally “for desires/lusts.” It indicates that the goal of the plans is to satisfy the desires of the body. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in regard to its lusts (NASB)

may be fulfilled (NJB)

the flesh: Here this word refers to the natural way people live. Here are other ways to translate this word:

human nature

our natural inclinations

our old nature

our own desires

See how you translated this word in 8:3.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

ἀλλὰ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλά ἐνδύσασθε τόν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν καί τῆς σαρκός πρόνοιαν μή ποιεῖσθε εἰς ἐπιθυμίας)

But here indicates that what follows is in strong contrast to what was said in the previous verse. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a strong contrast. Alternate translation: [Instead of doing those things,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνδύσασθε τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν

dress_in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλά ἐνδύσασθε τόν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν καί τῆς σαρκός πρόνοιαν μή ποιεῖσθε εἰς ἐπιθυμίας)

Paul speaks of Christ as if he were clothing that someone could put on. He means that people should behave like Jesus behaves. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [act like the Lord Jesus Christ]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῆς σαρκὸς πρόνοιαν μὴ ποιεῖσθε, εἰς ἐπιθυμίας

˱for˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλά ἐνδύσασθε τόν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν καί τῆς σαρκός πρόνοιαν μή ποιεῖσθε εἰς ἐπιθυμίας)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of forethought or desires, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [do not think ahead with regard to what the flesh desires]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῆς σαρκὸς

˱for˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλά ἐνδύσασθε τόν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν καί τῆς σαρκός πρόνοιαν μή ποιεῖσθε εἰς ἐπιθυμίας)

Here Paul uses flesh figuratively to refer to sinful human nature. See how you translated a similar use of flesh in [7:18](../07/18.md).
