OET (OET-LV) Brothers, the indeed good_pleasure the of_my heart, and the petition to the god, because/for them is for salvation.
OET (OET-RV) Brothers and sisters, my heart would be very pleased indeed if Israelis would get saved, and that’s what I request from God.
In this section Paul compared the Gentiles to the Jews. Some Gentiles believed in Jesus and God made them righteous, but the Jews tried to obey the law of Moses to become righteous. They stumbled over who Jesus was as the Messiah, because he did not fit their ideas of what the Messiah should be.
Paul explained that he wanted the Jews to believe in Jesus as the Messiah. The Jews were enthusiastic to follow God, but they did not understand the right way to become righteous.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
The Jews followed the wrong way to become righteous
The Jews followed the Laws of Moses but did not believe in Jesus as the Christ/Messiah
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites
¶ My brothers and sisters, the desire of my insides and the prayer I make to God for them
¶ My fellow believers, I want deeply/greatly/truly and pray to God for my tribe/people-group
Brothers: Here this word refers to believers in Jesus, both men and women. The word indicates a close relationship between believers because God has made them his (adopted) children. It does not refer here to his fellow Israelites who did not believe in Jesus, as in 9:3. See how you translated this word in 1:13 or 8:12.
my heart’s desire: This phrase indicates that Paul was about to speak of something that he really wanted to happen. The word heart refers to the inner person, where thoughts and feelings occur. In some languages people use a different part of the body. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
the desire of my insides/liver
My real desireUma Back Translation on TW.
I really want thatWestern Bukidnon Manobo Back Translation on TW.
prayer to God: Some languages must use a verb here. For example:
I pray to God
for the Israelites: There is a textual issue in 10:1a: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word of-them (RSV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB). (2) Some Greek manuscripts have the words of-the Israel (BSB, KJV, NIV, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). It is recommended that you follow option (1). The BSB, NIV, NLT, GW, NET, and NCV probably follow option (1), but explain “them” here as referring to the Jews. The Greek word that the BSB translates as Israelites is literally “them.” It refers to the Jews. Some English versions explain the word, as the BSB, perhaps because a new chapter has begun.
is for their salvation.
is for them to be saved.
that God will rescue them from the penalty of sin/wrongdoing.
is for their salvation: The Greek is literally “for salvation.” Paul wanted his fellow Jews to believe in Jesus and therefore God would save them from going to hell for their sins. For example:
that they may be saved (ESV)
See how you translated salvation in 1:16 or “saved” in 5:9 or 8:24.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
ἀδελφοί
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀδελφοί ἡ μέν εὐδοκία τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας καί ἡ δέησις πρός τόν Θεόν ὑπέρ αὐτῶν εἰς σωτηρίαν)
See how you translated this word in [1:13](../01/13.md).
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἡ & εὐδοκία & ἡ δέησις & σωτηρίαν
the & good_pleasure & the petition & salvation
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of good pleasure, prayer, and salvation, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [the very pleasing thing … what I pray … them to be saved]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας
¬the ˱of˲_my heart
Here, heart refers to a person’s inner being or mind. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [of my inner being] or [of my mind]
Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns
αὐτῶν
them_‹is›
The pronoun them in [10:1–4](../10/01.md) refers to Jewish people who do not believe in Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [the Jewish people]
OET (OET-LV) Brothers, the indeed good_pleasure the of_my heart, and the petition to the god, because/for them is for salvation.
OET (OET-RV) Brothers and sisters, my heart would be very pleased indeed if Israelis would get saved, and that’s what I request from God.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
