SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:12–17: Paul thanked Christ Jesus for his mercy

Paul began this section by thanking Christ Jesus for forgiving him. He described himself as the worst sinner. He said that Christ would forgive everyone who believed in him, no matter how sinful they were, just as Christ had forgiven him.

1:14a

And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me,

And the grace of our Lord: This means that the grace came from the Lord. The Lord acted graciously or showed his grace.

grace: The Greek word that the BSB translates as grace refers to kindness or generosity shown to someone who does not deserve it. See grace, meaning 2, in the Glossary.

our: This again refers to Paul, Timothy, and the Ephesian believers.

Lord: Scholars have interpreted this in two ways:

  1. It refers to the Lord Jesus (CEV)

  2. It refers to God the Father (probably the NLT)

In 1:12a Paul referred to Christ as “our Lord.” So it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1) that Lord here refers to Christ.

overflowed to me: The Greek word that the BSB translates as overflowed literally means “was more abundant.” Here the verb is used figuratively. The sense is that the Lord was extremely kind. Other possible ways to say this are:

The Lord generously poured out his grace upon me.

The Lord was wonderfully kind to me.

1:14b

along with the faith and love

along with: Along with grace, Christ gave Paul “faith” and “love.”

faith: This refers to Paul’s faith in Christ. See faith, meaning 1, in the Glossary.

love: In this context Paul probably meant that he was able both to love God and other people. To love God primarily means to obey him (1 John 5:3). To love other people primarily means to serve and help them (1 Corinthians 13:4–7; 1 John 3:16–18).

1:14c

that are in Christ Jesus.

that are in Christ Jesus: Scholars disagree about what the Greek word that the BSB translates as that are refers to. There are two ways to interpret this:

  1. Paul meant that both faith and love are in Christ Jesus. For example, the GNT says:

the faith and love which are ours in union with Christ Jesus (BSB, GNT, RSV, NIV, NASB, REB, CEV, NCV)

  2. Paul meant that love is in Christ Jesus For example, the NJB says:

with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus (NJB, KJV, GW, NLT)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).

in Christ Jesus: Paul said here that the faith and love that he received were in Christ Jesus. By this, he meant that he was able to trust and to love because he was now united with Christ Jesus.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑπερεπλεόνασεν Δέ ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν μετά πίστεως καί ἀγάπης τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

Paul here uses the word But to introduce an expanded description of the way Jesus treated him mercifully even though he persecuted the followers of Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces this kind of explanation, or you could leave But untranslated. Alternate translation: [Indeed,] or [In fact,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὑπερεπλεόνασεν & ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν

over_abounded & the grace ˱of˲_the Lord ˱of˲_us

Paul speaks of the grace of the Lord as if it were a liquid that filled a container until overflowed. He means that he received an extraordinary amount of grace. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I received from the Lord so much grace] or [the Lord gave me very much grace]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν

the grace ˱of˲_the Lord ˱of˲_us

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of grace, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [our Lord acted so graciously that what he did]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν

˱of˲_the Lord ˱of˲_us

Here, the phrase our Lord could refer to: (1) Jesus. Alternate translation: [of Jesus our Lord] (2) God the Father. Alternate translation: [of our Lord God]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑπερεπλεόνασεν Δέ ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν μετά πίστεως καί ἀγάπης τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of faith and love, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [so that, in Christ, I believe and love]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

¬which in Christ Jesus

Here, the phrase in Christ Jesus could describe: (1) both faith and love. Alternate translation: [that are both in Christ Jesus] (2) just love. Alternate translation: [that is in Christ Jesus]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

¬which in Christ Jesus

Paul uses the spatial metaphor in Christ Jesus to describe the union of believers with Christ. In this case, being in Christ Jesus, or united to Christ Jesus, explains how Paul has faith and love. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that indicates that Paul has faith and love as one who has been united to Christ Jesus. Alternate translation: [that exist in union with Christ Jesus] or [that come from being united to Christ Jesus]
