SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:40–45

This paragraph describes the final battles and end of the despicable king of the north.

11:40a

At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle,

At the time of the end: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as At the time of the end does not state of what this time is the end. Scholars disagree as to whether it is the end of the world or the end of the rule of the evil king of the North. It is recommended that you leave this as a general statement. For example:

When the end comes

When it is time for the end

the king of the South will engage him in battle: The Hebrew verb phrase that the BSB translates as will engage him in battle means “will make war with him.” The king of the South will order his armies to attack the king of the North. Here are some other ways to translate this:

the king of the south will attack the king of the north (NLT)

the southern king will wage war against the northern king

11:40b

but the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots, horsemen, and many ships,

but the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots, horsemen, and many ships: This verse part describes the response of the king of the North to the attack of the king of the South. He will counter-attack with a well-equipped army that includes horses and men who could fight on horseback, and also a large navy.

In some languages it may be natural to begin a new sentence here. For example:

Then the king of the north will storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and a large armada of ships. (NET)

The king of the North will attack with chariots, soldiers on horses, and many large ships. (NCV)

11:40c

invading many countries and sweeping through them like a flood.

invading many countries and sweeping through them like a flood: This clause continues to refer to the king of the North. The phrase sweeping through them like a flood is a simile. The invasion is compared to a flood. The point of comparison is overwhelming force of the invading army. Nothing could stop it. There are several ways to translate this figure of speech:
