This paragraph continues to describe the conflict between the northern and the southern kingdoms.

11:7a

But one from her family line will rise up in his place,

¶ “One of her relatives will begin to rule as king of the south.

But one from her family line will rise up in his place: The Hebrew more literally says, “And one from the branch of her roots will arise in his place.” This verse part indicates that a relative of the murdered queen from the south will come to power. This is probably a reference to Berenice’s brother, who became Ptolemy III (and thus “king of the South”) after the death of his father Ptolemy II in 246 B.C. However, you should not make this explicit in the translation. You may wish to write a footnote with this information. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

There will arise in his place one from her family line (NET)

One of her relatives will become king in the south

one from her family line: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as one from her family line is more literally “from the branch of her roots.” This is a reference to someone from the same family line. Use an expression that is natural and clear in your language. For example:

a branch from her roots (RSV)

one of her relatives (GNT)

will rise up in his place: This phrase indicates that the relative will come into power. The place is probably a reference to the position of ruler of Egypt. The relative of the murdered queen will become “king of the South,” of Egypt. Here are some other ways to translate this.

will come into power

come against the army of the king of the North, and enter his fortress,

He and his forces/army will march/go against the northern king’s forces/army. They will invade the fortress cities of the king of the north.
This new king and his men/troops will attack the men/troops of the northern kingdom and will conquer his fortifications/defenses.

come against the army of the king of the North, and enter his fortress: This verse part indicates that the relative of the murdered queen, the new king of the South, would attack the northern kingdom. He would invade their fortress or stronghold. Here are some other ways to translate this:

He shall come against the army and enter the fortress of the king of the north (NRSV)

He will attack the northern army, enter the stronghold of the northern king (GW)

This refers to the time when Berenice’s brother, having become Ptolemy III of Egypt, ordered an attack on the northern kingdom, the Seleucid Empire.11:7 The Encyclopaedia Britannica says that this was to avenge the murder of his sister Berenice. See “Ptolemy III Euergetes.” However, you should not make this explicit in your translation. You may wish to make a footnote.

the army of the king of the North: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as the army means “the strength,” and is often translated as the army. In the historical situation, navies as well as armies were involved, and so the NIV uses the general word “forces.”

the king of the North: The phrase the king of the North refers to the Seleucid emperor. By this time Antiochus was dead and Seleucus II was the ruler of the northern kingdom.

enter his fortress: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as his fortress is probably a general reference to the defenses and strongholds of the northern kingdom. Here is another way to translate this:

capture its fortresses (CEV)

fighting and prevailing.

He will attack and conquer them.
He will utterly defeat them.

fighting and prevailing: The Hebrew is more literally “and he will deal with them and he will be strong/successful.” The queen’s relative, the new king of the South, would fight against the forces of the king of the North. He would win victories. In some languages it may be helpful and natural to make explicit who is doing the fighting, using the same terms that you used previously. For example:

This relative will make war against the king of the north, and he will be victorious.

In some languages it may be possible to combine the ideas of fighting and being victorious into one verb. For example:
