The Word “Hebel”

The noun הֶבֶל (hebel), rendered “vapor” in the ULT, is this book’s signature term for what is fleeting or insubstantial. Translators should convey transience rather than moral worthlessness.

The Title “Qoheleth”

The Hebrew title קֹהֶלֶת (from a root meaning “to assemble”) has no exact equivalent. Translators may render it as “the teacher|Teacher” or transliterate it.
