TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:27-43 The dedication of the new wall probably happened shortly after its completion (6:15-19). This account probably came from Nehemiah’s personal memoirs.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

יְהוּדָה֙ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן

Yehuda and,Benjamin

One possibility is that these were individual leaders named Judah and Benjamin. However, in the context of the book, this most likely means “people from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.” Their counterparts in the other group would be the other “half of the people” mentioned in 12:38. And since 12:31 says that these were “great” or large processional groups, you could translate this as “large numbers of people from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֖ה וְיִרְמְיָֽה

and,Shemaiah and,Jeremiah

These are the names of two men.
