Section 13:1–10: The first beast rose from the sea

In this section, John saw a beast rise from the sea and described him. The dragon gave authority to this beast. The beast slandered God. The beast killed believers. Non-believers worshiped him.

He who has an ear, let him hear: This saying urges readers to think carefully about what was about to be said next. It is similar in meaning to the same saying in 2:7, but here it refers to what John is about to say. For example:

If someone has ears, let him hear this:

John is addressing his listeners in the third person. It may be clearer in your language to use the second person. Alternate translation: [If any of you has an ear, you should hear]

John is referring to the ability to hear by association with the way having an ear enables people to hear. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [If anyone is able to hear]
