TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:11-18 another beast: This second beast, the third member of the evil trinity (see study note on 12:18–13:18), is later called the “false prophet” (16:13). As a high priest of false religion, he leads the world into worshiping the first beast and the dragon (see also 16:13-14).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

The Antichrist

The term antichrist appears only in John’s letters (1 Jn 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 Jn 1:7). John expected many antichrists to appear in history (1 Jn 2:18), all of whom would deny that Jesus is both divine and human (1 Jn 2:22; 4:2-3; 2 Jn 1:7).

Paul speaks of a “man of lawlessness,” who will come in the last days to stir up rebellion against God (2 Thes 2:1-12). This figure will “come to do the work of Satan,” chiefly by means of deception. Though not specifically labeled as “antichrist,” this “man of lawlessness,” like the “antichrists” described in John’s letters, will stand in opposition to the truth.

In Revelation 13, the hostile spirit opposed to Christ is personified by “another beast” who serves the dragon (Satan) and the first beast. The number of this antichrist, 666, probably stood for Nero and perhaps for the emperor Domitian (see study note on 17:8). Emperor worship—which proclaimed “Caesar is Lord!”—was a pseudo-religion that stood in opposition to proclaiming Christ as Lord.

Whether John expected a final antichrist even greater than a political figure like Nero or Domitian is uncertain. Either way, Christians must take seriously the presence of evil and its opposition to Christ in the people and power structures of the world. Resisting these enemies may lead to persecution and even death, but our hope rests in ultimate victory through Christ.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ποιεῖ

˱it˲_/is/_making

The pronoun it refers to the second beast, not to the image of the first beast. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “the second beast causes”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

τοὺς μικροὺς καὶ τοὺς μεγάλους, καὶ τοὺς πλουσίους καὶ τοὺς πτωχούς, καὶ τοὺς ἐλευθέρους καὶ τοὺς δούλους

the small and the great and the rich and the poor and the free and the slaves

John is using the adjectives small, great, rich, poor, free, and slave as nouns to mean certain kinds of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate these words with equivalent phrases. Alternate translation: “small people and great people and rich people and poor people and free people and slaves”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

τοὺς μικροὺς καὶ τοὺς μεγάλους, καὶ τοὺς πλουσίους καὶ τοὺς πτωχούς, καὶ τοὺς ἐλευθέρους καὶ τοὺς δούλους

the small and the great and the rich and the poor and the free and the slaves

John is using two extremes of importance, small and great, to mean people across the entire range of importance. John is using two extremes of wealth, rich and poor, to mean people across the entire range of wealth. John is using two extremes of status, free and slave, to mean people across the entire range of status. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use equivalent expressions or plain language. Alternate translation: “no matter what their importance and no matter what their wealth and no matter what their status”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

τοὺς μικροὺς καὶ τοὺς μεγάλους, καὶ τοὺς πλουσίους καὶ τοὺς πτωχούς, καὶ τοὺς ἐλευθέρους καὶ τοὺς δούλους

the small and the great and the rich and the poor and the free and the slaves

These three phrases mean similar things. John is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them. Alternate translation: “people of every different kind”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τοὺς μικροὺς καὶ τοὺς μεγάλους,

the small and the great

John is speaking as if unimportant people were literally small and as if important people were literally large or great. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the unimportant and the important” or “unimportant people and important people”

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

δῶσιν αὐτοῖς

˱they˲_/may/_give ˱to˲_them

The pronoun they is an indefinite pronoun that does not refer to anyone in the immediate context. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this with a different expression that does not use an indefinite pronoun. Alternate translation: “they might have to receive”
