13:10 There are two textual variants here. The text could also say that those who kill with the sword will themselves be killed with the sword, paralleling Matthew 26:52. However, in view of the next verse that encourages the believers to endure persecution, rather than expecting retribution, the text as translated is the one preferred here. See Jeremiah 15:2.

In this section, John saw a beast rise from the sea and described him. The dragon gave authority to this beast. The beast slandered God. The beast killed believers. Non-believers worshiped him.

If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity he will go: There is a textual issue in 13:10a: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the text if anyone into captivity. Many English versions add the verb “be” or “go” here (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the text if anyone leads (others) into captivity (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. These words indicate that God is in control. If God plans for someone to be made a prisoner, then that will happen. Other ways to translate these words are:

Whoever is meant to be captured will surely be captured (GNT)

anyone is to die: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God plans for someone to kill you by the sword

God plans for enemies to kill anyone with a sword

by the sword: This phrase is an example of purposely killing someone. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate only killing by the sword and not any other way of purposely killing someone. If that is true in your language, you may want to indicate that it refers generally to purposely killing someone. For example:
