The Resurrection of the Dead

Jesus spoke of a future resurrection of all people—either to eternal life or to judgment (Mark 12:26-27; John 5:28-29; 6:39-40, 44, 54; 11:25-26; cp. Luke 20:34-36). When Christ returns, all his people will be resurrected to be with him forever (1 Thes 4:13-18; cp. 2 Cor 5:1-10).

This strong hope characterized the outlook of the early Christians. They were able to endure their suffering because their eyes were fixed on what lay beyond this life (2 Cor 4:16-18; cp. Heb 12:2). They expected Jesus to return and resurrect their bodies, and they looked forward to living with him forever (1 Pet 1:3-6, 23). Their faith was based on the foundation of Jesus’ own bodily resurrection (1 Cor 15:12-20; Acts 4:33; see also 2 Cor 4:14).

Resurrection bodies will be fundamentally different from the bodies we experience in this life, with all of their limitations and failings. These renewed bodies will be glorious, strong, immortal, and spiritual, like Christ’s own resurrection body (1 Cor 15:35-58).

Because they are already joined to Christ, believers actually begin to experience resurrection existence here and now. They have already been “raised” with Christ; they have already been given “resurrection life” (Rom 6:4-11; 8:10-11; Col 2:12). As a result, their lives are now centered in the spiritual realities of heaven rather than in worldly things (Col 3:1-4). Believers can experience the transforming power of that new life here and now, the new life of the Spirit that frees them from the power of sin and death (Rom 8:1-4). In all the difficulties they face, their trust is not in themselves but in the resurrection power of God (2 Cor 1:9).

Section 15:1–58: Believers will rise from the dead

In this section Paul reminded the Corinthian believers about the gospel and showed them that the resurrection from the dead was an important part of the gospel. First (15:1–11) he wrote about the evidence showing that God raised Christ from the dead. Then (15:12–34) he taught that God will raise believers from the dead. Finally (15:35–58) he taught about what the resurrection body will be like.

In this paragraph Paul wrote about how God will conquer death. God will rule over everything and everyone.

Then the end will come,

Then: The word Then introduces something that happens after Christ’s people are resurrected. It is not clear whether or not there is an interval of time between these events.

the end will come: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the end will come is literally the end. The BSB has supplied the words will come. It refers to the end of this age.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

Some English versions begin a new sentence here. For example:

At that time… (NCV)

when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father: The phrase hands over means “gives” or “yields.” The phrase when He hands over the kingdom to God indicates that at the end of time Christ will give the kingship to God. Christ will stop ruling as king, and God will rule instead.

Here is another way to translate this phrase:

he will give the kingdom to God the Father (CEV)

the kingdom: The word kingdom refers to the activity of ruling. See Key Biblical Terms “Kingdom of God.” It refers to Christ’s rule over his people.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

he will cease to reign and God the Father will begin to reign

he will ask God his father to rule over his people

he will give all his authority to God his father

15:24c

after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power.

after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power: The pronoun He refers to Christ. Make sure it is clear in your translation. For example:

Christ will overcome all spiritual rulers, authorities, and powers (GNT)

dominion, authority, and power: These Greek words have approximately the same meaning. They refer to any kind of ruler, whether a human being or a spiritual being that is opposed to God. In some languages it may be natural to translate these words using one or two terms rather than three.

Here are some other ways to translate these words:

In some languages you cannot use an abstract noun. It may be possible to say:

all the spirits who rule, and all the people who have authority and power

In some languages it may be natural to put this verse in chronological order. For example:

This does not mean that there will be no more world, but it means that things will be very different after the end. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind what end Paul is speaking about explicitly. Alternate translation: [the end of this world] or [the end of the way things are now]

The name Father makes it clear that Paul is speaking about “God the Father” to distinguish him from “God the Son,” who is the one who hands over the kingdom. Use a word or phrase here that clearly names “God the Father.” Alternate translation: [God the Father]
