OET (OET-LV)And one of the four living_creatures gave to_the seven seven messengers bowls golden, being_full of_the rage of_ the _god, the one living to the ages of_the ages.

OET (OET-RV)Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven messengers seven golden bowls that were full of the anger of God who lives through all the ages,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:1–8: Seven angels held seven plagues and victorious believers sang

In this section, John saw another sign in heaven. The sign was seven angels ready to cause seven plagues. He also saw a group of believers who had not submitted to Satan. They sang a song of praise to God and Jesus. Then he saw the seven angels prepare to inflict the plagues on those who refused to submit to God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

John saw seven angels empowered to cause seven plagues and a group of believers in heaven

The believers who were victorious over the beast sang praise

15:7a

Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels

four living creatures: The Greek word that the BSB translates as living creatures is literally “living (ones).” The word refers to beings that are like angels. The living creatures speak and praise God (4:8). Other ways to translate this phrase are:

four living beings (NLT)

four living things/ones

See how you translated this phrase in 4:6 or 14:3.

15:7b

seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God,

seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God: These words are a metaphor for God’s anger, that it is like water or another drink such as wine. In some languages it is not natural to speak of anger as a liquid. If that is true in your language, you may want to make the metaphor into a simile. For example:

seven golden bowls filled with water/wine/liquid that represents the wrath of God

bowls: The Greek word here refers to a dish used to pour out offerings of liquids. It is similar to a soup bowl. You should not refer to them as “soup dishes” or anything related to food. Translate this word as you did in 5:8.

15:7c

who lives forever and ever.

who lives forever and ever: This clause tells the reader more about God. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that there are other gods and only this one lives forever and ever. If that is true in your language, translate this clause so that it tells more about God. One way to do that is to start a new sentence here. For example:

He lives forever and ever.

forever and ever: The Greek phrase is literally “into the ages of the ages.” The word “age” refers to a very long time, so the phrase “the ages of the ages” refers to eternity. For example:

for timeless ages (JBP)

See how you translated this phrase in 1:6 or 14:11.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

γεμούσας τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ

being_full ˱of˲_the rage ¬the ˱of˲_God

John is referring to God’s punishments for sin by association with the wrath that God feels because of sin. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [being full of punishments from God]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

τοῦ ζῶντος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων

˱of˲_the ¬the the_‹one› living to (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἕν ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ζῴων ἔδωκεν τοῖς ἑπτά ἀγγέλοις ἑπτά φιάλας χρυσᾶς γεμούσας τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων)

This expression refers to endless future time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [who lives for all eternity]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:7 the four living beings: See 4:6-8.
• a gold bowl: These bowls are probably like the offering pans that were used in ancient worship (see Exod 37:16).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
