OET (OET-LV)And I_saw something like a_sea glass having_been_mixed with_fire, and the ones overcoming of the wild_animal, and of the image of_it, and of the number of_the name of_it, having_stood on the sea the glass, having harps of_ the _god.

OET (OET-RV)I saw something that was like a sea of glass that had been mixed with fire. The people who had been victorious over the sea creature and over its image and over the number of its name were standing on that sea of glass. They were holding harps from God

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 15:1–8: Seven angels held seven plagues and victorious believers sang

In this section, John saw another sign in heaven. The sign was seven angels ready to cause seven plagues. He also saw a group of believers who had not submitted to Satan. They sang a song of praise to God and Jesus. Then he saw the seven angels prepare to inflict the plagues on those who refused to submit to God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

John saw seven angels empowered to cause seven plagues and a group of believers in heaven

The believers who were victorious over the beast sang praise

15:2a

And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire,

something like a sea of glass mixed with fire: The thing that John saw looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire.

a sea of glass mixed with fire: The fire was probably mixed into the sea of glass. The fire was not on top of the sea of glass. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

a glassy sea blended/combined with fire

a glass sea having fire mixed into it

The clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. Probably God or someone whom God sent mixed it. For example:

a sea of glass that God/someone had mixed with fire

a sea of glass that had fire throughout it

a sea of glass: This phrase refers to a large flat area. It was smooth and shiny like glass, not hilly or bumpy. See how you translated this phrase in 4:6.

mixed: The Greek grammar indicates that the fire was already mixed with the sea of glass when John saw it.

15:2b

beside which stood those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name.

beside which stood: There are two ways to interpret the Greek preposition that the BSB translates as beside:

  1. It means beside. For example:

standing by (GNT) (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NET, REB, NCV, ESV)

  2. It means on. For example:

standing on (NASB) (NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, KJV).

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Aune (page 872) says “it is not appropriate to regard the crystal sea as the ‘floor’ of heaven upon which its inhabitants stand.”

those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name: This phrase describes those standing beside the sea. The BSB emphasizes the phrase in English by placing it after the verb “stood.” The Greek does not have an emphasized phrase. For example,

And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God. (NASB)

Then I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire. I also saw those who had won the victory over the beast and its image and over the one whose name is represented by a number. They were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps that God had given them (GNT)

those who had conquered: These believers had conquered because they did not submit to the beast. They remained faithful to Jesus even when the beast tortured or killed them. The believers were not victorious because they had won a battle.

In some languages a literal translation would wrongly refer only to fighting. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

the beast and its image and the number of its name: There is a textual issue in 15:2b: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the text the number of his name (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few later Greek manuscripts have the text his mark the number of his name (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. These are the three things that the believers were victorious over. They did not submit to the beast. They did not submit to his statue. They also did not allow anyone to put the number of his name on their forehead or hand.

15:2c

They were holding harps from God,

harps from God: The Greek phrase is literally “harps of God.” This phrase probably indicates that God gave the harps. For example:

harps from God (NJB)

The BSB clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

harps that God had given to them

harps: A harp is a stringed instrument. See how you translated harps in 5:8 or 14:2.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς θάλασσαν ὑαλίνην

like ˓a˒_sea glass

The point of this comparison is that the large object made of glass looked like a sea. That is, it was wide and spacious and level. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. See how you translated the similar expression in [4:6](../04/06.md). Alternate translation: [a large glass surface]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

μεμιγμένην πυρί

˓having_been˒_mixed ˱with˲_fire

The point of this further comparison seems to be that the glass sea was sparkling with light or reflecting the flashes of light that came from the nearby throne, as John describes in [4:5](../04/05.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [that looked as if it was flashing with fire]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοὺς νικῶντας ἐκ τοῦ θηρίου, καὶ ἐκ τῆς εἰκόνος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶδον ὡς θάλασσαν ὑαλίνην μεμιγμένην πυρί καί τούς νικῶντας ἐκ τοῦ θηρίου καί ἐκ τῆς εἰκόνος αὐτοῦ καί ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ ἑστῶτας ἐπί τήν θάλασσαν τήν ὑαλίνην ἔχοντας κιθάρας τοῦ Θεοῦ)

John means implicitly that these people were victorious because they did not worship the beast and his image and did not accept the number of his name on their right hands or foreheads. You can provide this information in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [who had not worshiped the beast or his image and who had not accepted the number of his name as a mark on their right hands or foreheads]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
