OET (OET-LV) After these things I_saw another messenger coming_down out_of the heaven, having authority great, and the earth was_illuminated with the glory of_him.
OET (OET-RV) After all that, I saw another messenger coming down from heaven. He had been given great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his radiance.
In this section, three heavenly beings each announce something about Babylon. The first announcement is that the city is destroyed. Her riches and prosperity have been taken away.
The second announcement is that God’s people should leave Babylon before God destroys her. It also describes how kings and others mourn over the destroyed city.
The third announcement is that Babylon will never be built again.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
An angel announced that Babylon was destroyed, and some groups are sad
Announcements about the destruction of Babylon
Various people talk about Babylon
After this I saw another angel descending from heaven
¶ After those things, I saw another angel descending from heaven.
¶ After that, I saw another angel as he descended from heaven to earth.
After this I saw: The Greek word that the BSB translates as this is literally “these (things).” It refers to what John had already seen. This clause introduces a new scene in heaven. For example:
After I saw those things, I saw
heaven: Here the word heaven refers to the place where God lives.
with great authority,
He had authority over many things,
His right to rule was great,
authority: Here the word authority refers to having the right and power to control or rule over someone or something. For example:
right to rule/govern
power to control
These verses do not say what the angel had authority over. Some languages must say what the angel has authority over. If that is true in your language, refer generally to what the angel might have authority over. For example:
authority over things
and the earth was illuminated by his glory.
and the earth was lighted/alight with his splendor/radiance.
and his glory made the earth bright. (NCV)
and he shone brightly and lit up the earth.
and the earth was illuminated by his glory: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:
his splendor brightened the whole earth (GNT)
his glory made the earth bright (NCV)
illuminated: Here this word refers to the angel’s splendor shining on the earth.
glory: The Greek word here is often translated as “splendor” (as the NJB has here). Other ways to translate this word are:
radiance
glorious light
See how you translated this word in 1:6 or 15:8.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἡ γῆ ἐφωτίσθη ἐκ τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ
the earth ˓was˒_illuminated with the glory ˱of˲_him
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [his glory illuminated the earth]
18:1 This angel derived his splendor from heaven. The word splendor is normally used for the divine presence.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
