OET (OET-LV)After these things I_looked, and see, a_door having_been_opened_up in the heaven, and the voice the first that I_heard was like a_trumpet speaking with me saying:
Go_up here, and I_will_be_showing to_you what it_is_fitting to_become after these things.

OET (OET-RV)After that, I looked and wow, a door opening in heaven, and the first voice that I’d heard that sounded like a trumpet told me, “Come up here and I’ll show you what must happen after those things.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–11: John saw the throne in heaven

In this section, John told more about the vision that he saw, using language similar to 1:10. In his vision he saw in the sky an opening into heaven. He could see God on his throne and different beings worshiping God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The vision of the throne in heaven

A vision of God’s throne in heaven (GW)

4:1a

After this I looked and saw

After this I looked: The Greek word that the BSB translates as this is plural: “these (things).” The word refers to the messages to the churches (chapters 2–3) and probably the first vision (1:10–20) as well. Other ways to translate this phrase here are:

After these things I looked (NASB)

Then as I looked (NLT)

When those messages were finished, I looked around/up

4:1a–b

I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven: The Greek words are literally “I saw, and look, a door in heaven, already opened already/earlier.” The phrase “and look” emphasizes or calls attention to the words that follow. The phrase “a door in heaven, already opened” describes what John saw. Other ways to translate this statement are:

I suddenly/unexpectedly saw something else! It was a door which was open into heaven

as I looked, wow, I saw an opening into heaven

Another vision appeared before/to me. I saw a doorway opened into heaven

I had another vision and saw an open door in heaven (GNT)

I had a vision: a door stood open in heaven (REB)

See how you translated “and behold” in 1:18 or “See” in 3:8.

4:1b

a door standing open in heaven.

a door standing open in heaven: The open door allowed John to see into heaven and perhaps even to enter it. The voice said “Come up here.” This implies that the door was somewhere up in the sky, not down on the ground. For example:

a door that opened into heaven (CEV)

an entrance in the sky which was open

a door standing open: This phrase refers to an opening shaped like a door in the sky. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

open door (RSV)

entrance

doorway

heaven: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as heaven refers to the place where God lives.

4:1c

And the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a trumpet was saying,

the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a trumpet was saying: The clause the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a trumpet refers to what happened earlier. In some languages it is more natural to use a separate sentence. For example:

I heard the voice like a trumpet that spoke to me previously. This time it said…

Earlier I had heard a trumpet-like voice speaking to me. Now it spoke to me again and said…

the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a trumpet: This phrase refers to the voice that John heard in 1:10. See how you translated “a loud voice like a trumpet” there.

the voice…speak to me like a trumpet: This phrase describes what the voice sounded like to John. Other ways to translate the phrase are:

the person whose voice sounded like a trumpet

the person with the trumpet-like voice

4:1d

“Come up here,

Come up here: This is a command. Jesus gave the command, and John was ready to obey it.

4:1e

and I will show you what must happen after these things.”

what must happen: The Greek words are literally “the things necessary to happen.” The events in chapters 4–22 will certainly happen, because God requires them to happen. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the things that will certainly happen

the things which will necessarily occur

has been determined to happen

See how you translated a similar phrase (“what must…come to pass”) in 1:1.

after these things: The Greek word that the BSB translates as these things is literally “these (things).” It refers to the things that John was shown in chapters 1–3. For example:

in the future (NJB)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, καὶ ἡ φωνὴ ἡ πρώτη

˓a˒_door ˓having_been˒_opened_up in ¬the heaven (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Μετά ταῦτα εἶδον καί ἰδού θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καί ἡ φωνή ἡ πρώτη ἥν ἤκουσα ὡς σάλπιγγος λαλούσης μετʼ ἐμοῦ λέγων Ἀνάβα ὧδε καί δείξω σοί ἅ δεῖ γενέσθαι μετά ταῦτα)

John is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [I saw a door opened in heaven and I heard the first voice]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ

˓a˒_door ˓having_been˒_opened_up in ¬the heaven

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [an open door in heaven]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ

˓a˒_door ˓having_been˒_opened_up in ¬the heaven

John is speaking as if there were literally a door leading into heaven through which he could see. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I could see through an opening into heaven]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς σάλπιγγος

like ˓a˒_trumpet

The point of this comparison is not that the sound of the voice was like the sound of a trumpet but that the voice was loud like a trumpet. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [that had been loud like the sound of a trumpet]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:1–5:14 This section introduces the visions and judgments to come. John presents God in his heavenly court—the scene of the drama of Revelation (4:1-11)—and the Lamb, who has a central role (5:1-14). John contrasts the majesty of God with the so-called majesty of Caesar. God’s power and splendor is unequaled by the ceremonial court of any earthly ruler.

4:1-11 The description of God’s throne room stretches the imagination. It builds on the visions of Isa 6:1-4, Ezek 1:4-28, and Dan 7:9-10, where God is seen enthroned in power and majesty. God’s throne dominates Revelation, and the worship in the rest of the book flows from this scene. God’s magnificence, grace, and glory are fundamental to the church’s worship.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
